UE climbs from behind to beat La Salle

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors climbed from behind to defeat the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers, 85-83, on Saturday's Season 76 UAAP men's basketball at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The game was close in the first two quarters, with La Salle maintaining a slim 4-point lead, 43-39, heading into halftime.

La Salle threatened to pull away at the start of the fourth by extending its lead to 10, 68-58, with 8 minutes to go in the ballgame.

But turnovers and cold shooting from the Green Archers allowed UE to trim the lead.

Olivares stars as Warriors force Archers to another meltdown

The University of the East Red Warriors mounted a comback in the dying minutes of the fourth to defeat the De La Salle Green Archers, 85-83, on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Ralf Olivares mounted a cruicial 5-0 run of his own early in the final minute to give UE the victory.

An Almond Vosotros three with 2:56 remaining in the fourth broke the deadlock to give La Salle some breathing room, 76-73. The Archers sent Charles Mammie to the line in the next possession, where the big man hit both to cut the lead to one.

Bulldogs eye fast start vs Falcons

NATIONAL University tries to get off to a hot start when it shoots for a fourth victory versus Adamson in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at 4 p.m. today at Mall of Asia Arena.
NU star Ray Parks said the Bulldogs can’t have a repeat of their Wednesday loss to Far Eastern University, 83-87, even if they nearly pulled off a huge comeback from a 20-point hole in the final quarter.
“It’s a learning experience for us that we can’t start slow,” said Parks, the league’s Most Valuable Player in the last two seasons.

Javier, Olivares star in 4th quarter run to lift UE past La Salle

MANILA, Philippines – University of the East mounted a spirited comeback in the fourth quarter and escaped La Salle, 85-83, Saturday in the UAAP season 76 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Red Warriors erased a 10-point deficit in the last eight and a half minutes of the game with a rally sparked by Chris Javier and sustained by Roi Sumang, as Ralf Olivares and Dan Alberto completed the comeback for their second straight victory.
While it was a great comeback, head coach Boycie Zamar rued his players’ lack of mental toughness.

Ateneo wins Battle of Katipunan, Maroons still winless

With the league fastly changing, one thing remained the same: Ateneo still claims Katipunan.

Kiefer Ravena, Chris Newsome, and Ryan Buenafe led a balanced attack to stave off a late rally by their Katipunan neighbors, as the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles slayed the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 72-64, Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“I was giving them a very clear picture of what UP can do as we were reviewing the games of UP. In fact that team is really very dangerous and I think that they’re not winning anything is not a reflection of what they really can do”, said Ateneo Head Coach Bo Perasol. “Good thing about us is Kiefer is already 50 percent. You still have to watch out for the other 50 percent.”

Ateneo repulses UP for second win

The Ateneo Blue Eagles put away a late charge from University of the Philippines for a 72-64 win on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, the defending champions’ second victory in UAAP Season 76.

Star guard Kiefer Ravena came up with 13 points, two rebounds, and three assists for the Blue Eagles, who saw a huge lead threatened late in the game by the Fighting Maroons.

Ateneo led by as much as 19 points, 57-38, in the third quarter after a 19-8 blitz capped by a layup by Vince Tolentino.

FEU stakes unbeaten record against UST

MANILA, Philippines – The Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws will go for their sixth consecutive victory when they take on the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers in the first round of the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Tamaraws bucked a late-game charge by the National University Bulldogs last Wednesday to win for the fifth straight time.

But FEU coach Nash Racela lamented their poor finish to the contest, as they squandered a 20-point second half lead and had to rely on star guard Terrence Romeo for clutch baskets.

Blue Eagles bounce back, keep Maroons winless

Struggling and all, reigning five-time champion Ateneo still has the number of the University of the Philippines.

Backing on a big explosion in the middle quarters, the Blue Eagles reasserted their mastery over the hapless Fighting Maroons with a 72-64 victory Sunday afternoon in the UAAP Season 76 men’s cage action at the MOA Arena.

Prized guard Kiefer Ravena sizzled in the third canto, pumping in nine of his team-high 15 points, while veteran forward Ryan Buenafe and rookie Chris Newsome had 13 markers each as Ateneo made it eight in a row against UP since the Diliman-based squad essayed a 68-58 stunner in July 26, 2009.

FEU remains unbeaten as Terrence Romeo, RR Garcia help Tamaraws thwart UST

Far Eastern University dispatched University of Santo Tomas, 77-67, to nail its sixth straight victory in UAAP Season 76 Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Terrence Romeo led the Tamaraws with 19 points and three rebounds, while his backcourt partner RR Garcia scored 17 points, four rebounds, and six assists for FEU.

After a close battle through the first three quarters, FEU pulled away in the fourth period. Romeo and Garcia caught fire to fuel a 12-5 run that gave the Tamaraws their biggest lead of the game at 13, 74-61, with 4:22 left in the game to ice the victory.

MVP on his mind, but UAAP crown is what FEU’s Terrence Romeo is after

MANILA, Philippines—Churning out at least 20 points a game for an undefeated squad, it’s hard not to put Terrence Romeo in the conversation for the most valuable player of the UAAP season 76 right now.
Even Romeo himself is aware of that.
“Oo (naisip ko na), nandun na eh,” Romeo said when asked whether bagging the MVP plum is on his mind after Far Eastern University’s 77-67 win over University of Santo Tomas Saturday.
But, like what he said the first time, that is not the glory he’s ultimately chasing this year.
“Hindi ko naisip (yung MVP) nung kakasimula, hindi,” Romeo said.

What I saw was practically watching one Fighting Maroon single-handedly cut down a near-20 point lead into half in a 3-minute span. The alley-oop dunk by Chris Newsome was the timely dagger but the Blue Eagles can't afford to show even the slightest iota of complacency come Sunday next week in a game which could make or break their entire season.

And UST is definitely one team that would be more than happy to see the Eagles sink deeper into the hole they are currently in.

Unbeaten FEU Tamaraws finding success using Gilas-style offensive system

Far Eastern University is on top of the UAAP Season 76 pack after going unbeaten in its first six games.

The Tamaraws can credit a big part of that to their crisp execution of an offensive system that should be familiar to Filipino basketball fans — the dribble-drive motion offense run by the Philippine national men’s basketball team under coach Chot Reyes.

“Yes, it’s the same dribble-drive principles,” said FEU coach Nash Racela, who is an assistant coach under Reyes in the Gilas Pilipinas coaching staff.
