Hamburg belongs to the greatest music cities in the world, by the way, also many famous composers/musicians were born and/or were active here: Johannes Brahms (born in Hamburg), Georg F.Händel, Gustav Mahler (chief of the Hamburg Opera house), Georg P. Telemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy ("Wedding march", born in Hamburg), Pyotr Tchaikovsky, György Ligeti ("2001: A Space Odyssey"), John Eliot Gardiner, The Beatles, Bert Kaempfert ("Strangers In The Night", "Spanish Eyes", born in Hamburg).
Over 3 million spectators visit Hamburg's eight 1000+ seats big music venues a year, what makes a daily average of 8,200 - not to mention a bit smaller ones like Tivoli, Schmidt's and round 150 music clubs in the city. When in three years the Elbphilharmonie and two new, additional to the three already existing, big musical theatres will be finished, this number should increase to round 14,000 a day. Anyone knows figures for New York, London, Paris?

Hamburg: 555 City Faces, Facades, Facets - Part 35 of 55

That's typical; you can live here in Barmbek, Wandsbek, Sternschanze, Altona, Lurup or elsewhere, for 5, 10 or even 20 years, and ... you will never go to Bergedorf, like even my friend who wasn't there for 15 years, he said. First after I asked him to go to Mümmelmannsberg he suggested on this occasion we might also take a look at Bergedorf and Lohbrügge "just 5 minutes by car".
Bergedorf is pretty small, a little more than 30,000 people live there, but the quarter has a very nice atmosphere and the center, including the old castle with surrounding park, looks really lovely.
I'm hoping the pictures and 50 more in the slideshow prove that. The last photo there is my favorite one, by the way.

#350 - Bergedorf - Sachsentor (street) and more.

@letniczka
People in Hamburg more love music notes than balls or pucks ... although as well I as some of my friends we really like ice hockey

@wkiehl101
Thanks, very kindly.

@Jane
Yes, that's exactly the heart of the matter.
Living is very easy in Hamburg since the city is simply made for people and not for strange prestige purposes of some crazy businessmen. Fantastic public transportation system, pretty fast traffic, 1700+ km ways for bikes, recreation, green, water, decentralized workplaces, offices, business, gastronomy, shopping opportunities, etc - all that not only in the center but in many quarters. Also no skyscrapers as there is a 100 m limit here, that makes the atmosphere more human and liveable than elsewhere.
These are probably reasons why Germans think Hamburg is the best city in Germany for living, according to the last official surveys at least.

Oh, I didn't know it was on 25th July 1943, just saw a short report on TV.
Exactly 70 years ago Hamburg was bombed and destroyed during the operation Gomorrha.

But this was not the first time because 100 years before that, in 1842, the city was destroyed in the "Great Fire", the today's inner city almost completely.

Photo from Wikipedia.

The location today.

In the Middle Ages Hamburg was also burnt down by Slavs, twice as I remember, but this happened long time ago.

Four times burnt and risen from the ashes.

Many videos on operation Gomorrha.
