Stem-cell therapy wipes out HIV in 2 patients

LONDON - Two men with HIV have been off AIDS drugs for several months after receiving stem-cell transplants for cancer that appear to have cleared the virus from their bodies, researchers reported on Wednesday.

Both patients, who were treated in Boston and had been on long-term drug therapy to control their HIV, received stem-cell transplants after developing lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

I think this is a form of viral gene therapy (I may be wrong). This is what I what I would like our country to focus on. Meron nang ganitong research ang China, India, Pakistan, Iran, and to some extent Malaysia and Thailand. We are too focused on herbal medicines. We should diversify research to other things like stem cells and gene therapy.

Chikungunya cases in N. Ecija double in a week

MANILA -- Health officers in Laur, Nueva Ecija are alarmed by more than 400 cases of chikungunya in the area.

Authorities said the cases doubled in only a week.

The Provincial Health Office has begun distributing larvicide in various barangays to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Chikungunya is a disease similar to dengue. They are both contracted by mosquitoes carrying the disease and have the same symptoms.

In Asia Pacific, deaths from hepatitis three times higher than AIDS/HIV

In the Asia-Pacific region, considered the biggest and densest part of the world, deaths from viral hepatitis each year are three times higher than those of HIV/AIDS, a study said.

“Despite the escalating death toll from viral hepatitis, governments have often been at a loss about how to tackle these diseases, lacking the technical expertise, resources and even evidence to justify the investments needed to confront viral hepatitis,” said Dr. Jose Sollano, Jr., gastroenterologist and member of Coalition to Eradicate Viral Hepatitis in Asia Pacific (CEVHAP) in the Philippines.

Sollano made the statement during a media roundtable discussion on hepatitis on Thursday in Greenhills.

YES to "free lunch to public school children".

If PARENTS are Unable/Irresponsible,
the State should provide for the child (100% free support)...

A Child should NOT Work/Beg to survive.

*** PENALIZE the PARENTS, Not the CHILD. ***

DOH: Dengue cases in NCR down 68%

At least 4,042 dengue cases—10 of them fatal—have been recorded from Jan. 1 to July 13 in Metro Manila so far this year, the Department of Health (DOH) said Friday.

In an interview on GMA News TV's "News To Go," Health Secretary Enrique Ona attributed this to their effective campaign against the mosquito-borne disease.

The DOH's National Epidemiology Center placed the number of cases in Metro Manila at 4,042, which was 68 percent lower compared to the 12,648 during the same period last year.

Philippines one of Asia’s ‘wormiest’ countries

We are in a state of war. This was what speakers declared during a forum on parasites held July 18 at the University of the Philippines Manila.
In “Kontra Bulate Para sa Kalusugang Pangkalahatan,” Doctors Vicente Belizario Jr. and Marissa Alejandria of the UP National Institutes of Health said the Philippines is one of the “wormiest” countries in Asia, with the highest prevalence of schistosomiasis in the continent.
