Sports infrastructure development gets fund boost in Malabar

KOZHIKODE: In a move that would provide a major boost to the sports development of Malabar, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has presented a Rs 35 crore proposal to set up the SAI training centre at Calicut University.

The subcommittee formed by the university to study the proposal has given in-principle nod for the project.

The final decision on the matter would be taken at the syndicate meeting to be held on June 15, clearing the decks for the setting up of a modern sports training centre on the campus.

The move would augment the sports infrastructure of the region as the package would see the SAI setting up an indoor stadium, synthetic track and hostels apart from creation of new fields. Also on the cards are proposal to create an aquatic complex.

G Kishore, regional director of SAI, told TOI that the project offers a win- win deal for both the varsity and the sports body. "Our existing training centre at Kozhikode is functioning under severe constraints. There is no proper venue for training athletes and the budding athletes have to rely over various grounds scattered in the city for their daily coaching. We feel that the sports sector of Malabar will be boosted if the training centre can be set up on the Calicut University campus," Kishore said.

The SAI training centre currently provides training to around 60 students from across Malabar.

University sources said that the varsity syndicate will give the nod for the project subject to the approval from the state government for giving around 15 acres on lease.

University sources said that SAI has offered to invest Rs 35 crore for the project in the first phase. "The facilities to be set up by SAI would add to the sports development plans of the Calicut University and could be used by students from 400 affiliated colleges under the varsity," a top varsity sports administrator said.

Kayaking competition to be held on August 23, 24 @ Tusharagiri

The first ever white water Kayaking competition in south india

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle4948231.ece

Giving a much needed impetus to the tourism prospects of the district, the Chalippuzha at Thusharagiri in the district will witness the first white-water Kayaking competition in South India on August 23 and 24 this year, said its organisers at a press meet here on Tuesday.

The programme titled ‘Malabar River Festival, Thusharagiri,’ is being organised under the aegis of a committee in collaboration with the district tourism promotion council, said V.D. Joseph, chairman of the organising committee. According to him contestants from several states have already started practicing the event at different stretches of the river at Thusharagiri. “The high profile event is expected to invite contestants from different Kayaking nations including Italy and the U.S.A.,” said Mr. Joseph.

The competitions will comprise an ‘Open category’ for professional kayakers, a ‘beginner category’ and a ‘women’s category.’ There will be three types of events and they are Giant Slalom (individual time trial with obstacles), Boaster cross (four kayakers at a time racing downriver) and a team downriver race.

Mr. Joseph said that special attention will be given to safety to ensure a safe competition. “Awareness will also be made about the dangerous aspects of the river and the correct ways to approach them,” he said. Stating that the programme was chiefly aimed at including the Malabar area into the international white-water circuit, the organisers said that it would also help to showcase the event before the local communities in an exciting manner.

Synthetic track for Calicut University

The University of Calicut will have a synthetic track within a year. The Central Public Works Department will prepare an estimate for the ambitious project in two weeks.

A Central team comprising Indian Athletic Association secretary C.K. Vatsan, Kerala Athletic Association secretary M. Velayudhan Kutty, and Central Public Works Department Chief Engineer K.U. Panikkar visited the university on Thursday and held discussions with top officials.

The Central Ministry for Youth and Sports has sanctioned Rs.5.5 crore for constructing a synthetic track at the university.

The Central team examined the facilities available at the university stadium. Vice-Chancellor M. Abdul Salam and Pro Vice-Chancellor K. Ravindranath accompanied the team.

The synthetic track is being set up with international quality. University officials said that the stadium could host even international competitions. Separate dressing rooms and toilets will be constructed for men and women.

The construction is expected to begin by the end of November after completing various other formalities. Mr. Vatsan assured the

university officials that national level competitions would be held at the university as soon as the synthetic track was ready. The university has been asked to ensure security and maintenance of the synthetic tracks.

White-water splash at Thusharagiri

A deafening roar of wild waters that gush down through the rocky terrains greets you at the upper streams of the Iruvanjipuzha and the Chalipuzha at Thusharagiri and Kodencheri in the hilly eastern region of the district. The rumbling clamour of these untamed waters is all set to have the accompaniment of a cheering crowd this monsoon season. White-water kayakers from different parts of the globe have already started practice in the rapids for an international competition slated for August 23 and 24.

Goodwave Adventures, in association with Southern River Runners and the District Tourism Promotion Council, will organise the event named Malabar River Festival after several exploratory descents in the area by kayakers from southern India. “We already have kayakers from the United States, Nepal, Italy and Hungary practising in the rapids of the region,” V.D. Joseph, chairman of the organising committee told The Hindu .

Experts have found the Iruvanjipuzha and the Chalipuzha among the best white waters in southern India for kayaking considering their suitable temperature and relatively thinner chances of accidents.

Prime aim

The main aim of the festival is to showcase Kerala’s diverse options for white-water enthusiasts. The district administration and the DTPC are busy making the support arrangements and accommodation facilities for the participants, officials, and the tourists. “We have sought permission from the Water Resource Department for the event,” said Jessy Helen, DTPC secretary (in charge).

The organisers are busy mobilising finance for the event. “We will need at least Rs.15 lakh to organise an event of this scale,” said Antony Neervelil, convener of the festival. “People are thrilled at the prospects of watching a kayaking event, that too an international one, for the first time,” he said.

There will be an open category for expert paddlers who will challenge themselves on hard white-waters, up to class IV and V. There will also be men’s and women’s categories for beginners and new paddlers who want to test their skills. Giant Slalom (individual time trial with obstacles), Boaster cross (four kayakers at a time racing downriver) and a team downriver race will be the three types of events at the festival.

Whitewater kayaking contest from Friday

The Malabar River Festival, the first whitewater kayaking competition in South India, will be held at Thusharagiri from August 23 to 25, opening a new epoch in the tourism possibilities of the region.

District Collector and Chairperson of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) C.A. Latha told a press meet on Wednesday that the programme organised by the DTPC, with the help of the district sdministration and the Kodenchery grama panchayat, intended to explore the turbulent waters of Iruvanhippuzha and Chaliyar, which are reportedly ideal for whitewater kayaking.

The event will be inaugurated by Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar at Pulikkayam Bridge on Iruvanhippuzha at 9.30 a.m. on Friday. Minister for Youth Affairs and Welfare of Scheduled Tribes P.K. Jayalakshmi will give away the prizes at the valedictory function on Saturday. A special ‘Splash Down’ is being organised on Chaliyar at Feroke on Sunday.

The idea came up after Jacopo Nordera, founder of Madras Fun Tools, recently came down to explore the waters of north Malabar. More than a hundred paddlers, some from countries such as Italy, United Kingdom, Nepal, the United States, and Denmark, have been training at Thusharagiri for the past one month to participate in the event. The Indian Army team will represent India in the event.

The organisers plan to continue this event in the future, depending upon the success this year. The Kerala Kayaking Academy, formed for the promotion of whitewater kayaking in the district, is planning to develop Thusharagiri as a permanent kayaking spot and offer training in the sport.

The competitions will be held following the Olympic standards and experts from across the globe have been roped in to ensure the safety of the participants. Competitions will be held in five categories. Kayak Slalom is for experienced paddlers in which the competitors have to race individually through gates placed in the river. Sprint is an individual time trial on a difficult rapid where the paddler has to choose the fastest line. Boater Cross is the event in which best the 16 athletes from Slalom and Sprint will compete in heats of four at a time. There are separate races for beginners and women. Besides, there will be a fun race using inflatable kayaks in order to let everyone experience the joy of the river.

The first prize for the first three categories is Rs.40,000, while for the beginner and women’s category, it is Rs.10,000.

The Rapid Raja, the athlete who gets the best combined results from the first three categories, will get a cash prize of Rs.60,000.
