True.... Food Court and Hypermarkets are the first things to attract crowds to malls.... Here they got a right mix...

Cinepolis will be openly only by Christmas.... Naturally till then, its Food Court and other stores to be the crowd puller

Definitely, BBQ Nation needs to come up at some Hotel premises as its basically a Pub Restaurant concept, barring Gujarat where Prohibition is there...

I guess, the next in league for Kochi's cuisine aspirations are Chillies, TGI Fridays, Applebee etc etc....

Do we have any Chillies, TGIF, Applebee restaurants in India ? Even if there are, I am assuming it will be without liquor license ?

Just did a quick search. We have TGIF at Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangaluru. Hope they open one in Kochi too. Couldn't find any Chillies or Applebees though.

I dont find the food options very attractive. Nothing exclusive. Also too many coffee joints-Coffee day, Coffee beanz and Coffee lounge. Why three of them in the same mall? Chakde is really hopeless. Its business is really bad in bye pass and gold souk. Panampilly nagar outlet closed down. French toast is also hopeless. Also they do not have exclusive outlets which are not there elsewhere in Kochi. Though China Mirch sounds very attractive.

Food are normally personalized choices... We cannot generalize and say... Say, I hate to have a KFC in India.... I don't like Indian KFC at all.... Horrible according to me... They won't even serve the Original KFC, in India. But that doesn't mean KFC is bad... Its heavily patronized and thats why they are rapidly expanding and opening more and more stores everywhere...

In a Mall setting, people come and have dining, as part of socializing and hang-out... Its rarely meant for a very serious gourmet's pleasure... Very often the best food one gets, happens to be some very small outlet... Say I hate Kayee's Biriyani from their posh DH Road outlet, while its small restaurant in Mattancherry is still the best... But its not good to go there with families and posh friend circles for a dine out...

In my opinion, the food options at Centersquare are ideal.... Coffee Beanz and CCD are different.... You get good Kerala styled Appams and Egg curries from Coffee Beanz, while never ever such things from CCD.... Likewise the pastries of French Toast is a class apart, atleast to me....

Well, these are personalized opinions indeed

This is the answer. Thanks MI.
If you are out for an evening dinner / lunch with with some exclusivity and fine dining...i would prefer the stand alone restaurants...say if my choice is Japanese cuisine I would rather go to Hotel Presidency than their "mall facility". And moreover my assessment is primarily on mall management perspective...their tenant list and product mix portfolio.

The macaroons I had from French toast a few months ago were even better than the ones in the UK. We are lucky that kochi has a large NRI/ people who have travelled abroad crowd who know how good it is.

Most locals would find the pastries not sweet enough for their liking as they probably are more used to the local bakery stuff.

KOCHI: Giving scant regard to health concerns of Kochiites, civic authorities hurriedly disposed of approximately 1,000kg of rotten beef seized from a meat dealer in Mattancherry after a raid on Saturday. Food safety department officials, who are empowered to take legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, were not part of the raid. The meat, which was more than one-week old and stored in unhygienic conditions, was reportedly brought from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The meat was buried at Brahmapuram waste treatment plant without collecting samples for lab tests.

"Since food safety officials were not available, corporation health officials carried out the raid. It was being readied for supply on Saturday evening. It was not suitable for consumption," said health supervisor of city corporation T K Beena, adding that the dealer, Kochukoya, had been supplying such meat for the past one year.

Food safety department officials said that it is not possible to take legal action against Kochukoya as seizing and disposing measures were carried out in their absence. "We had organized joint operations with corporation officials in various parts of the city. But this time we were not informed about the inspection," said district food safety officer K Ajith Kumar.

The civic administration said the dealer didn't have a valid licence for storing and supplying meat. The shed was registered as a facility for peeling prawns. The meat, which was supplied to Kochukoya at Rs10 per kg, was to be sold at Rs 30-40 per kg to restaurants and other eateries. The authorities also seized the goods auto of the dealer. The seized meat included mainly liver and heart. "We were trying to catch this supplier for quite some time. Repeated inspections will be carried out in the coming days to prevent such problems," said chairman of health standing committee T K Ashraf.

Civic authorities registered a case against Kochukoya under the Kerala Municipality Act for operating without a valid licence and storing meat in unhygienic conditions. The meat was stored in ice boxes said officials, adding that it should have been stored at minus 18 degrees.

The cost of beef in city is around Rs 200 to Rs 225 per kg. While beef biriyani is priced at Rs 80-Rs 110, a plate of beef fry/roast costs Rs40 to Rs 80. Meanwhile, Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association denied the claim that the meat was to be sold to restaurants.

Lazy Retreats | Kochi’s own Pappadavada

Kochi: The humble Pappadavada, which has been a ubiquitous evening snack on the shelves of local ‘thattukadas’ across Kerala, may have perhaps never 'imagined' that one day it would be glorified as a brand name in Kochi.

The fate of pappadavada drastically changed when it caught the attention of Minu Pauline, an ex-employee of Citibank. Minu, who had been searching a unique name for her dream project, found the name catchy. Call it serendipity if you like, or maybe love after many bites, but pappadavada was elevated to a new status. Minu christened her food joint, “Pappadavada adhava oru nadan chaayakkada” or simply, Pappadavada.

The new avatar of the traditional chayakkada, which has almost become a relic, is to start selling hot tea and crispy pappadavadas along with other snacks at M G Road, near Shenoys Junction, Kochi from 11 September. The restaurant would be inaugurated at 5.30 pm. Once open, services would be available from 8.30 am to 1.00 am every day. Not only snacks, but also meals are available here, that too for a pocket-friendly price. What makes Pappadavada a unique food joint is its ethnic food combos and pricing.

It would have combos like puttu & naadan chicken curry, kappa & meen curry, kanji & payaru, idiyappam & kadala curry, thalppakettu kozhi biriyani, a Tamil Nadu-based biriyani, which is the signature dish of the restaurant, and lots more. Non-veg items will be available after noon.

The exciting part is that you can walk into Pappadavada even with Rs 4, because there will be something here for you to buy with that amount. Prices start from Rs 4 and goes up to Rs 10 for tea/coffee & snacks and Rs 20 to Rs 55 for combo meals and Rs 75 for Thalppakettu kozhi biriyani. You would also have fish combos, veg combos, chicken combos, beef combos and breakfast combos.

Now, let us take a virtual tour to Pappadavada. According to the owner, the restaurant would have an ambience that reminds one of a bygone era, spiced up with a chic attitude. The room, with standing tables, are to be furnished in local Kerala style. Old South Indian movie posters would adorn the walls to remind one of the good old chayakkada. There would also be a big blackboard with the menu and prices, a throwback to olden times when you could walk into a chayakkada with a few coins and enjoy a hot tea with snacks and then idle away time in the company of like-minded people. In a nutshell, the joint would be a new generation chayakkada. So, now you have a very good reason to call an early end to your hectic schedule on September 11, collect your friends and have a pappadavada. Maybe, if you are lucky enough, you might catch someone reading the newspaper aloud for others while the radio blares old Malayalam songs in the background!

The 'Vada' has already started spreading its aroma on Facebook and now has more than 3500 likes. Now let’s sign in and give it a 'Like'- not in FB, but by walking straight into the restaurant. Get crunching….

Interesting question. Tastes like the prime cut grass fed beef (not the FoodMaxx corn, waste and hormone fed) IMHO.

I liked it.
