is the astrolabe cauldron still burning, i was thinking that since the khalifa tower is burning as well that they are just going to use it for the opening, pictures of it in the daytime would also be appreciated thanks good job on doha2006! |

EDIT: ah ok, pinoy ka nga, hehehehe... anyway, they should keep the astrolabe burning because it was the one lit up with the asiad flame, the aspire tower on the other hand was lit up in some other way.... not with the asiad flame...

They are putting a documentary on Qatar TV about how the opening ceremony took place and what modifications were needed in the Stadium. They also showed the Aspire Tower and its stages of construction.

Games opening ceremony wins global praise
Games opening ceremony wins global praisePublished: Friday, 8 December, 2006, 12:39 PM Doha Time
Staff Reporter SIX days since the three-hour long spectacular extravaganza was revealed to the world, the opening ceremony of the 15th Asian Games, Doha, 2006, still continues to steal the limelight. Doha has received the thumbs-up from the vast majority of the international media - even from non-Asian Games participating countries. Plaudits have poured in from various media across the globe, who described the grand spectacle viewed by some 3bn people worldwide as ‘magical’, ‘lavish’, ‘spectacular’, and ‘beautiful’. The opening ceremony had it all: spectacle, imagination, originality, history, song, dance and modern technology. The kaleidoscope of colour and movement left everyone awestruck with its amazing display of fireworks, lighting and performance, leading many to believe that it was the best-ever opening ceremony. Paul Deighton, Chief Executive of the London Olympics Organising Committee, praised The Games’ opening ceremony, adding that Beijing and London Olympic organisers now felt the pressure. "It was a splendid opening ceremony," said Deighton. "It was fantastic. It combined the tradition and the modern world in a wonderful spectacle." The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) described the event as a "lavish ceremony" with Arabian horses galloping against a shimmering backdrop of thousands of neon-lit pearls. Television New Zealand was charmed by the impressive projection of Arab history even under uncharacteristic heavy showers. "More than 30,000 fireworks lit up the night sky as the lavish production evoked the rich history of the region in a performance even rain failed to dampen," the report said. It added that the ceremony was a "whirlwind of Asian culture and Arabian splendour." The involvement of the Australian horse in the act of the lighting of the cauldron amazed many. A New Zealand-based equine website Horsetalk, was impressed by the lighting mechanism. "The final torchbearer, HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, cantered up a steep ramp to the height of the stadium to light the flame... The horse, with specially adapted shoes for extra grip, slowed momentarily halfway up the ramp, but continued on to complete the stunt," the report said of the incredible feat. UK-based website Monster and Critics said the ceremony had both spectacle and modern technology with the world’s largest LED screen that "made use of several special effects that would not have been amiss in a Hollywood blockbuster." Canada’s Chronicle Herald was also full of praise saying the enchanting ceremony was a "spectacle of pyrotechnics, animatronics and boundless enthusiasm." The opening ceremony of The Games has surpassed the expectations. The triumphant applause from the vast majority of the international media is probably the best evidence of Doha’s success in organising the mega sporting event. http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topic...6&parent_id=16 |
