An interesting tip about the Visconti Castle of Pavia -my home, incidentally- is the project dating back to the 30s to rebuild the fourth side.

Interesting, I didn't know this...certainly would have been marvelous, if faithfully rebuilded (as should be the civic tower, IMHO)

These are not times suited for architectural integration of historical sites, which would be deemed 'fake'.

Maybe the tide will turn. Ironic how most of the most appreciated buildings dating back to the middle ages were in fact strongly integrated in the age of Historicism and Romantic Revival.

What's with all those square holes in the walls? What was their purpose?

A very practical one: to insert the scaffolding.

true
To be clear, I agree with integration as long as it's stylistically coherent and keeps each existing building's element (unlike sometimes was done in past centuries)

Gripsholm castle in S÷dermanland province, Sweden.

Gripsholm castle was first built in the 1370's, and passed through many hands in the following 150 years. In 1526 king Gustav Vasa confiscated the castle and tore down most of it in order to build a more modern castle on the old foundations. This castle was finished in 1545. The castle was added to in the 1560's, 1590's and 1690's.

Today the castle houses the National Portrait Gallery, the worlds oldest. It was started by Gustav Vasa, who in 1548 had at least 98 paintings in the castle. The first guide to the gallery was printed in 1755, when it held 275 portraits. Today the gallery holds 4500 portraits.

Wow...Caserta and Schwerin. The not-so-known places are often the most impressive.

^ Couldn't agree more! While Caserta is definitely known to most Italy tourists, I guess, Schwerin yet needs to be discovered more.
