You know that the new stadium is going to have bad sightlines.

It hasn't even been built yet and I'm sure it's already one of the most hated facilities in the country.

I think that's a stretch, seeing as the bulk of the populace outside GA is unaware or sees it as simply another stadium deal. Even FieldofSchemes hinted at the comparably good deal the City is getting. (Doesn't mean it's a good deal, just illustrates how bad many others have been.)

If they swing the site adjacent to the Dome and build a thing of beauty on time and on budget then all will easily be forgiven. Doubly so if the space where the Dome currently sits is used to enahce the plaza space around the GWCC rather than just for parking.

I hate to admit this, but is the Georgia Dome were to get demolished after the Falcons' pie-in-the-sky new stadium gets built, it would almost certainly be the most depressing and unfathomable loss of any stadium is the U.S. and possibly the world, especially if I were to look at any old photos of the Dome. I was fine with other facilities such as Candlestick Park and the Metrodome and even the old Yankee Stadium getting demolished after their replacement with new stadiums, but I won't be fine with the Georgia Dome getting demolished, and I am not sure that I would accept the idea of the Georgia Dome's demolition.

You mean this one:

I disagree. For me, the very good sightlines and the reduced number of end zone seats are the two saving graces of the proposed digs.

Seriously...

I mean, NOTHING wrong with this stadium, even 5-6 years from now, it would be a horrible move.

Candlestick you understand because it comes from the era where football and baseball teams had to share a facility, which in today's sports world is ridiculous (in America, anyway). The Metrodome I understand because of the air-bubble roof that collapsed. But the Georgia Dome getting mowed down into a parking lot would be tragic.

Its not about the Georgia Dome. Its about the Falcons not having a better revenue stream than they could get with their own stadium.

Any chance Georgia Dome hosts a Superbowl after 2015?

I probably don't think so.

It is unknown what is even preventing the Atlanta Falcons from owning/operating the Georgia Dome like some other NFL teams. It's actually owned by the State of Georgia, and is operated by the Congress Center Center Authority. Falcons want to operate the new stadium themselves.

You just answered your own question. Would probably cost half the cost of a new stadium to buy it from them, then they'd have to do a renovation like something above to maximize their revenue.

Didn't even notice the date. Sorry about that. I blame the pain meds.

Only $100 million in bonds remain on the Dome.

Earlier Thursday, a state agency discussed other aspects of the project – including the planned demolition of the Georgia Dome in 2017.

The plan, the Georgia World Congress Center Authority board was told at a meeting at the Barnsley Gardens resort in Adairsville, Ga., is for demolition of the Dome to begin in March 2017, the same month that construction of the new stadium is scheduled to be completed. The Dome will be 25 years old at the time.

Carl Adkins, general manager of the Georgia Dome, said the challenge will be “to gracefully wind down operations while managing a full event load and keeping our team fully engaged to serve our customers.”

“We want to go out on top,” Adkins said.

The plan is for the Falcons to begin playing in the new stadium in the 2017 NFL season and for many other Georgia Dome events – the SEC Championship football game and the Chick-fil-A Bowl among them — to also move into the new venue.

The Georgia Dome site will be converted to surface parking for the new stadium.

Surface parking?! That would be wholly disappointing. Hopefully they'll at least incorporate a pervious surface and something more of a unifying plaza for the three facilities.

Exactly. It was a do-over for half of the ex-Olympic Stadium.

To be fair, that was planned from the start...
