You're right. That raised eye brows as well. The winter Olympics benefit when the competition continually gets tougher so it's been a welcomed development to see Australia become competitive.

Australia only started winning medals since Lillehammer and since then, a total of 5 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze. We may not be in the big Winter Olympic nations like Norway, Germany and Canada etc, but still good for a pretty much Summer sports nation

Australia really started coming on strong in both the summer and winter Olympics around 1995. Before Atlanta 1996, there wasn't much separating Canada and Australia in all time medals won. Australia (261) had the lead over Canada (254) by a mere 7 medals if you can believe it.

My guess is that they'll become rental cabins, typical for similar mountain resorts.

I did hear that a whole lot of other buildings elsewhere are supposed to be converted into ordinary residences after the games though.

Also, on topic:
http://airgorod.ru/sochi/tour.html

Fresh birds eye 3D panoramas over the Sochi region. Looks really good. The sheer amount of urban development that's been going on there is borderline ridiculous.

In panoramas 5 and 6 you can see some of the houses that were built for the people that got evicted from the area where the big venue park was built (well, if they wanted to stay). I read somewhere that average compensation per household was $100 000, which is a lot there.

Please, don't be a spoilsport and remove the rehearsal pics. The opening ceremony should remain a surprise.

Oh please. That ship has sailed. The organizers are well aware that is impossible with all the social media today. You should stay in a convent until Opening if you don't want to be tempted with all the peeks. Am happy for them!!

Where did you read it? In fact, only a few people agreed on compensation because the price was too low. The amount of compensation was appointed by officials, and it was lower, than the cottages really cost. Terms of compensation were too long. Most of locals prefered relocation to completed appartments which were constructed by state-controlled corporations. These cottages locates far away(5-10km) from sea and they are built poorly. Also these apartments are smaller.
All this has led to protests and hunger strikes
off:$100 000 is not a lot there.

And $100k per capita - that's 3.5 million rubles. That gets you a small apartment in central Moscow (avg 235k RUB/sqm), and that's where prices are hideously over-inflated. Outside of the capitals, it amounts to much more.

And kitsch/trash, yes, as with everything else around the world. It's typical. No show like that is outright "classy". If you want class, go to the ballet.

As far as typical construction of residential complexes in Russia goes, I come to think of Sweden and the big housing projects...

It's the same ****, all over the place. No difference.

Everything looks trashy for a brainwashed idiot. This is how any stadium looks during show, there aren't even any spoilers about ceremony, just an empty field.

Gosh, what a dumbass..
