WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Jets are exploring a move of their AHL farm team from St. John’s, N.L., to Thunder Bay, Ont., after a deal was announced to build a new $106-million “event centre” in the Lake Superior community.

But Mark Chipman, chairman of True North Sports and Entertainment, which owns both the Jets and AHL franchise, suggested Tuesday it wasn’t quite yet a done deal yet.

“This is a very preliminary step,” he said in a video statement on the team’s website. “It’s something that we’re going to explore.

“There’s a lot of work to be done for it to become a reality.”

Here's a rendering of the proposed arena and event centre:

Capacity: 5,700 arena and 50,000 sq. ft convention centre
Cost to build: $106 million

To be built in downtown Port Arthur, near the waterfront. Will be managed by Global Spectrum.

As of right now, the Lakehead Thunderwolves University hockey team will play there when it is complete.

"Focal Point" towers

I remember hearing about the focal point towers and was wondering what happened...why haven't they broken ground?

Google search found this thread as well as a Sudbury Star article (which was copy/pasted to this thread) saying that the towers were approved.

Sudbury so desperately needs high rise residential. The sprawl is crippling...

Here's a recent article: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbur...ving-1.1390567

The project was originally to be 17 storeys in height. Article was posted in 2013. The article states the developer is "still working on it". Not sure what the deal is.
