Wave power could bring 40,000 new jobs
An Enersis SA and OPD-Ocean Power Delivery Ltd (Scotland) €8.5 million Pelamis wave energy farm project for Northern Portugal could be the forerunner of an industrial cluster focused on wave energy. This in turn could generate 30 -40,000 new jobs. Portugal and Scotland are leading the world with this first ever offshore wave power project worth €8.5 million. The Pelamis P1A installation comprises three 750kW Pelamis machines and the 2.25MW scheme is off northern Portugal at Póvoa de Varzim. It represents the first stage of a 24MW plant. Generation capacity is sufficient to supply power to 7000 people. The Pelamis generators have an output similar to that of a modern wind turbine. The Portuguese consortium behind the deal is led by Enersis SA. The Projecto da Aguçadoura is designed to produce between 15% and 20% of Portugal's energy needs by 2020. The CEO-Companhia da Energia Oceânica project is a joint venture between Enersis SA (70%) and their technology partners, OPD (30%).
