I was reading the Barracks and found different pieces of information in different threads of our future super carriers. Being such a huge project for the defence of the UK I figured it'd be better creating a new thread just for the two.
Here is the proposed design. There are many images floating about but i'm hoping other people would post those. ![]() There will be two ships of the class, HMS Queen Elizabeth and the HMS Prince of Wales. I am not fond of both names. I'd rather they had something along the lines of the HMS Dreadnaught and the HMS Nemesis. Something beefy like the Invincible class of ships, HMS Illustrious, HMS Invincible and HMS Ark Royal. Anyway, if you have any news, might as well post it in here!

they definitely won't be commissioned in 2012/15. those were the original dates anticipated when construction was due to begin in 2005, it's now 2007 and the final designs have not yet been finalised.

There are so many different designs..does anyone know which one is the definitive final version? Or isn't there on?

They considered a large superstructure/minimal flight deck/maximum internal hanger layout, they also considered a small superstructure/maximum flight deck/minimal internal hanger layout....I believe they finally settled for the Thalys design you see above with the split superstructure/minimal flight deck/maximum internal hanger.

Must admt. I'm not a big fan of the names myself.
Firstly, it means that there will be two british registered ships called Queen Elizabeth 2. Unless Cunard are planning to scrap their liner? Does anybody know why they chose not to use the Ark Royal Name?

ark royal will be used again, its not unusual for a name to be used frrequently, but they rarely replace name for name.
Besides could be a lot worse you seen the name of the latest nimitz class ss George H. W Bush |

Ark Royal was originally to have been called "Indomitable" or something to keep with the "In" prefixes. The scrapping of the previous AR in about 1980 allowed the name to be reused when the new ship entered sevice some years later, so it was changed.
I dont know whether the QE2 is prefixed "MV" or "RMS" but this would distinguish it from "HMS QE2" In a recent post Zim Flyer reckons we should be due a construction announcement soon as a sweetner to voters, no doubt with a fair bit of sub contractor work going to Scotland. |

no, they have always said constuction to start 2008, commisioned 2012. since 1999, there has never been a 2005 start date. and although the exact specifications havent been finalised, they are almost complete. the picture that has been posted is the design they are going for and any incomplete specifications will be things we wont see.

It's not going to be the QE2, just the QE.
And the current Ark is reportedly going to be in use for many years yet, even after the new carriers have been launched, as a Commando/helo carrier so you can't use that name yet. There have been grumblings within the RN over ship names, as they also wanted to go back to the old Redoubt, Vengeful or Tempest type names instead of the current city names or (cringe) HMS Speedy. |

^Gibraltar.
I would like them to be called H.M.S Dreadnought and H.M.S Redoubt (If they are ever commissioned). |

I've heard from a very good source this project is definately going to happen. My gut feeling is we will hear about it in Gordon Brown's first 100 days, when all sorts of new and grande projects will be announced. |

Great, a political tool for Gordon "I'll spin my way through the next 4 years" "Fuck it" Brown - it's not a new project and has been around for years. It almost seems that it's been delayed continuously just for Gordon "Navy? What navy?!" Brown...

I like these names:
Reliant Nemesis Illustrious Invincible Dreadnaught Enterprise (It's a bit Americany, but the first ever version was the HMS Enterprize. Perhaps we could have her back from the Americans? MMmm, HMS Enterprize) Equinox Equilibrium Indomitable

They should call one HMS Late and the other HMS still not completed.
