Thank you for sharing these images. I lived in Ottawa for about a year and absolutely loved it with all its simplicity

WHAT???? for real???... this would be awesome for a city like Ottawa which has great density, but little height wise.

Over the next 5-10 years your going to see massive height as of now there is 20-30 buildings proposed/approved over 30 floors most over 40 and in Gatineau there is 10 proposed/approved over 30.

The proposed new addition to the Chateau Laurier hotel is not getting a positive response from the public; the mayor and others want a redesign. I think the new portion looks nice if it was built on it's own but not as an expansion attached to the old and iconic hotel.

While the Chateau Laurier's addition's design is very nice, my first thought was, "Did they not learn from the Hotel MacDonald's 1950s addition in Edmonton, and how ugly it was?" Wouldn't it be better if the addition had its facade match more closely with the original building, just like the Royal York's 1957 addition and the Lord Nelson Hotel's two additions in 1968 and 1975? Peter Claves, the architect of the Chateau Laurier's addition, stated that doing something like that would "confuse history". Art Phillips, director of development for Larco Investments Ltd., also stated that they're "not permitted to mimic the heritage". But at the same time, I'm not really a fan of such deviations within a historical landscape.

It was said on this article at the Ottawa Citizen website (in which Peter Claves defended the Chateau Laurier's controversial expansion plan) that the hotel's owners are looking at changing the shape of the roof of the two box-shaped additions in favor of a more pointed design. Plus, the floor-to-ceiling heights of the addition do not exactly match up with the original hotel building. At least the new addition isn't residential apartments, but rather "long-term stay" suites.

Its nonsense for Art Phillips to claim that Larco Investments are not permitted to design an addition that mimic's the "heritage". The original c.1910's design is modelled on a 15thC style French Loire Valley Chateau, which was in turn added to very successfully in the late 1920s with a large new wing in the same style. This design style is a large part of what makes the Chateau Laurier special, which in turn should inspire the form, architectural style and materials of the new addition rather than a glass and stone finished condo box which is what is currently proposed, and which the vast majority of people in Ottawa dislike.
