Gotta admit I was kinda shocked seeing that for opening night of the team's fancy new arena! And was curious to hear info from anybody on the board here, was it just people away from their seats checking out the new stadium or something like that?

It was a sellout. Maybe people even left by the 2nd period after they checked out the arena. I would imagine a good chunk of people were probably checking out the arena.

I don't know of a dual purpose arena where they do take the boards down during hoops. They simply put skirts over them.

You can see the tops of the boards, to the right, it's the long red stripe...

Same here. You can see the tops of the boards...

Boards here, indicated by long red stripe to left of court...

To the left of the court, you can see the partially uncovered boards...

The Red Wings explain all the empty seats.

I guess we will see if it continues.

No it wasn't it was packed during the 1st period, The 2nd and 3rd period yeah it was empty but you need to remember that most of the fans were scouting LCA plus quite a few of them were in either the restaurants or clubs as well.

Agreed. Things will probably get better over time. We will see.

A lot of rich people in that area then. Can buy the tickets then not even really watch and would rather eat at the restaurants.

Yep, while the city of Detroit has had its well discussed issues, the metro area surrounding the city is actually pretty wealthy on a per capita basis.

I was at the game last night. It was pretty surreal to see so many empty seats for their home opener in a new arena. It felt like a preseason game. Very disappointing. Already posted my review and thoughts on LCA on the last page, but here are my video highlights I took from walking around the place yesterday. I can't say I blame fans from roaming around the place during the game. I did that during the Wings preseason game during my first visit. I just hope after a while, the crowds inside the actual arena bowl starts to get bigger over time. I guess the product on the court (or rink) will have a huge say in that.

Were your tickets scanned when entering the seating bowl itself? If not, you could just buy upper tier corner tickets for less than $20 and go sit somewhere in the lower bowl along the sideline in one of the many empty seats.

Who thought having NBA and NHL teams in Detroit was a good idea?

Probably 70 or so years ago when Detroit was one of the largest and wealthiest major cities in the country, it made perfect sense.

Despite what people on here want to tell you, the location of The Palace was never an issue. When it opened in 1988 through 1993, the Pistons sold out every game, some 250 games. When the team regained it's championship form, they had another 6 season sellout streak of about 250 games and led the NBA in attendance. The Palace was consistently one of the top 10 busiest arenas despite only one major tenant where most have two.

The Pistons were in Auburn Hills longer than anywhere else. Northern Oakland county is one of the wealthiest areas and a major center for the area. A lot of these employees live and work near The Palace and don't want to go to Detroit now for games. Polls were mixed on the move for the Pistons downtown. The Palace was also a perfectly fine building. Despite what many will have you believe, the location of The Silverdome was never an issue. During the Barry Sanders era, the Lions averaged more fans than Ford Field. The issue with The Silverdome was that it was becoming outdated and too large. Not everybody is on this Detroit bandwaggon. The Pistons are going to have to put a good product on the floor and win new fans because they alienated a majority of their core by up and leaving with little advanced notice.

Yet the Red Wings are having the same issue as well. LA gets blasted for this constantly by the media. But when other so called "passionate sports cities" don't fill up their stadiums, they get passes and excuses. Doesn't make much sense.

No the Red Wings aren't having that issue. Last year they were 3rd in the league in attendance at 100% capacity. The Red Wings have pretty much been at full capacity for a couple decades now.
