I can't say I've ever gone shopping on a Saturday night TBH L2, can't say I'd be keen to either. On weeknights the bigger supermarkets are open until 9pm and until 5pm on weekends here. I have noticed supermarkets in the city and inner suburbs of Melbourne to be open later. I wouldn't know about the outer suburbs because I don't usually go there.

There are many IGA supermarkets open until late throughout Adelaide too but you probably didn't notice them because you were looking for the bigger stores. They often stock quality local produce and specialty goods, price competitive as well. They're better than the duopoly, apparently the world's best too.

Many countries in Europe do not have extended shopping hours, especially trading on Sundays (non-negotiable in some places) and it's a relatively new thing in Australia too. A place's commercial activity is one way to gauge vibrancy, but I think what's happening other than generic consumerism is more important and interesting.

Haha that's where I ended up, found a Romeo's Supa IGA that was open. Was quite pricey in there but no issues with the quality of the meat (was shopping for BBQ supplies!).

Agreed. Look at somewhere like Canberra, sure it has Kmart stores that open 24/7 but that doesn't make it an interesting place (which it isn't).

Have you got any pictures of Adelaide's beaches? They're not actually unpleasant for non-ocean beaches. Will be packed soon coming into summer, from what I recall Adelaide always cops the boiling hot days badly.

I reckon every city has something to offer and Canberra being the nation's capital has many interesting things to see and do...Canberra has a new cool too.

Have to know where to look in smaller cities to find what's happening, but understandable that visitors might find them sleepy because they don't have the busy street life of bigger cities or perhaps even the smaller denser places they come from.

Hot and dry and the beach is a great place to cool off. There's a few coastal sets starting on page three #55.

Great that there is a vegan festival! I'm not vegetarian myself, but I love veggie food: very healthy, tasteful and friendly to our planet.

Thank you all for your comments, likes and views.

Around North Terrace, the cultural and educational precinct of the city...our own little Ringstraße. An area you should definitely explore at a leisurely pace when in town.

Following five pics are on the University of Adelaide grounds. Rainbow flags are in support of same-sex marriage plebiscite, held recently.

Really amazing thread. Adelaide is clearly somewhere I should visit next time I'm over there. I always ignored it for some reason!
