Kerala University among top 1,000 globally

Gets 18th place among the 42 ranked institutions from India

The University of Kerala has found a place among the best universities in the world. The institution has been ranked, for the first time, among the top 1,000 universities in 77 countries in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2018 that assessed several performance indicators.

The announcement has come a few months after the university had secured an all-India ranking of 29 in the India Rankings 2017, under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), which was undertaken by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.

According to the THE World University Rankings, the University of Kerala (UoK) figures in the 801-1,000 band in the global ranking system. The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), which has been ranked within the top 1,000 universities for the second time, belongs to the same grouping. The UoK was also ranked joint 18th out of the 42 ranked institutions from the India.

The annual rankings, brought out by the UK-based university ranking agency Times Higher Education, has been generated on the basis of five indicators, viz., teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook, each of which represented key areas of excellence in higher education. Only 1,102 of around 20,000 universities worldwide were considered for ranking.

This is wonderful news for the City and the whole State.
Kudos to the KV, Pattom Team for this landmark achievement.

Equally happy to see that 5 schools from Kerala are among the 10 best Government Schools in India.

IIST reaches out for joint research projects

Shailesh Nayak, former Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, presents a medal to a topper at the fifth convocation of the IIST in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. With Cambridge varsity, ISRO for space telescope design

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) here is tying up with various research organisations and institutes to enhance its competence in select domains.

Addressing the fifth convocation function of the IIST here on Thursday, Director V.K. Dadhwal said the institute had entered into three fresh MoUs. It is joining hands with the Cambridge University and ISRO centres for the design of an advanced space telescope in visible and infrared region.

It has joined hands with the University of Colorado, US, to build a nanosatellite with ionospheric payload. The project to be executed by a consortium of universities also involves the establishment of a data reception centre at the IIST. Dr. Dadhwal said students from the IIST had presented their designs at a project review held at Colorado last month.

The third MoU is for establishing a partner group in the IIST in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany, to study galactic star formation.

The IIST is also close to concluding an MoU with CalTech, US, to develop the technology for next generation space telescopes. The project seeks to demonstrate hardware and software solutions for in-orbit, autonomous assembly and reconfiguration of modular spacecraft carrying identical active mirror segments.

Besides, the IIST has an MoU with CalTech and University of Boulder, US, involving exchange of students and faculty, joint research and fellowships for training and research at doctoral and post-doctoral levels.

IIST is one of the few organizations in the country to have so many international collaborations with highly reputed organizations such as Max-planck, Caltech.
Both pioneers in planetary science.

Rather than acquire just 60 acres, hopefully the government will acquire any large uninhabited plots. Wouldnt be a bad spot for future growth.

QuEST Global opens innovation centre in Thiruvananthapuram engg college

Quote:
Global engineering solutions provider QuEST Global has launched a QuEST Innovation Centre at the College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET) here.

It will provide training to students in engineering technology streams including IoT, deep learning and embedded systems and will help in bridging the technology gap between academia and industry.

Expected to commence in mid-January, it will serve as a platform for students to interact with subject matter experts in the engineering services industry and enhance their knowledge.

TWO-YEAR PROGRAMME

The two-year programme will be open to students in their fifth semester at CET, a spokesman for QuEST Global said.

They can choose the streams, for which they will receive course materials, including classroom and online training, and mentoring from industry veterans.

Initially, students of Electronics & Communication, Computer Science, Electrical and the Applied Electronics branches will be eligible to enrol.

S Narayanan, Vice-President and Centre Head, QuEST Global, Thiruvananthapuram, said the centre has been launched to implement the organisational charter of QuEST Global to support academia in the state and make students future-ready.

"This is a demonstration of our commitment to academia in the state to build a pool of brilliant engineering talent," he added.

LETTER OF INTENT

Students will get an opportunity to work on some QuEST Global projects and upon successful completion, some will be offered letters of intent for employment in the areas of automotive, hi-tech and medical devices.

"This programme is a pilot project and based on its success we will be rolling out this initiative in other engineering colleges in the state in a phased manner."

J David, Principal, CET, said engineering education in India has reached a point where it has to meet industry requirements to face the dynamic demands of the competitive market.

"Steps need to be taken to bridge the gap between industry expectations and what the curriculum offers.

"The partnership will provide students an opportunity to get one step closer to the industry and enhance employability.''

Good to know that the facility will be established in the life sciences park at Thonakkal.

The only issue which makes me incredulous about such ventures by the state government is its inability to fund and manage such initiatives.

If the research centre has to become a relevant entity in research in its domain, substantial funding would be required on a regular basis, even if we assume that there will be some revenue generation by the research centre. In the present state of the state finances ( which I am sure will only get worse in future if the government does not take quite a few quick and unpopular decisions and implement them sincerely), I have great doubt about adequate funds on a regular basis.

Further, will the government institute attract and retain high quality talent required for a good research centre? Even central government research intuitions barring a few are unable to do this.

While I have no idea about its practicability in research realm, a better way would have been to have a PPP model.
