#UC :AUBURN CENTRAL

This was originally in finns 4-12storey thread but it deserves its own thread since its 15storeys!!
SinCity today allerted us to a massive new scraper in the western suburb of Aurburn (17km west).
Finn found out more info>

It is a big big mixed-use development, right in the centre of Auburn, and kind of similar to other developments such as The Forum at St.Leonards, Pacific Square at Maroubra Junction and Kogarah Town Square at Kogarah, in that is is supposed to be the new central focus for the Auburn district.

It is located on a very large site in the centre of Auburn covering Nos. 57-61 Queen Street, Nos. 62-72 Queen Street, Nos. 128-132 South Parade, and Section of Queen Street between Park Road and Harrow Road, Auburn, covering 21,229m2.

The development will comprise:

- 13,260m2 retail floor space including: 6,690m2 discount department store (Big W), 3,400m2 supermarket (Woolworths), 510m2 mini major, 2,660m2 specialty stores.
- 3,056m2 of office space
- 471 apartments
- 1,266 car parking spaces
- Public square

I found this rendering of at least part of the development:

tower image-

I ended up contacting Scott Carver arcs and they told me the reason why it got so BIG! it all had to do with the size of the site and the community needed a town sq and large department store. The height is a 12storey apartment tower atop a 3 storey podium =15st/45m/150ft. The site only permits 6storeys/22m but the council decided to give bonus points for developing the block and including department store/retail ect. They will send me render soon.
The retail component will open before june 30 and apartments later in year.
It must look impressive out at Auburn! It will probably the tallest for a while as the council has since rezoned the sites south to 6 storeys and north to 3 storeys.
heres another perspective by inducta.com

Yeah, this one is a real monster! Can't think of any other residential development that wide and fat! lol I am surprised it's only 471 apartments - units must be pretty big on average! It's good there is a retail component too...What a landmark development for Auburn!

Wow, so that's what it is. I went past it on a train today and it's definitely a monster for this neck of the woods. A building of this scale stands out like Centrepoint when put in a suburban context.

Funny thing is I thought I counted more like 19 storeys - bit hard to tell though because I couldn't see the lower levels.

I live in the next suburb...
I've known about this for about 3 years... I've just neglected to mention it. Also I didn't know any of the specs because I'm not all that interested. I just want the new woolies & big w close to my house. Coles across the st will be so screwed.
There was some controversy when they bought up part of queen st in order to go ahead, especially due to the hindered access for the ambulance station next door.
Its not really in the heart of the Auburn CBD per se, its more on the fringe, but close enough.

Big W and Woolworths had their grand opening at 8am on Wednesday. By 1045, they had sold 17000 items. And at 930, Big W had to close its doors cause the store was packed.

Lol, how bizarre! Anyone would think they were opening a Krispy Kreme or something! I mean there's a Big W at Chullora which isn't too far away...

Did they have a sale on or something?

Pics I took today

Official logo

On Park Rd

All the highrise consturction you see in the back ground is all for Auburn Central.

The Main square at the corner of Harrow Rd & Queen St. Seems pretty barren, despite the Gloria Jeans and Subway (not in pic) tucked in the corners.

Looking SE down (now closed-off) Queen St from Park Rd.

Queen St Entrance

Crowds - its mainly crowded because its something new, althought there are a fair few grand opening specials in the stores.

So far the shops that are open (off the top of ma head) are:
Woolies
Big W
Half-stocked newsagency
Millers Fashion Club
Butcher/Deli
Michels Patisserie
Payless for Shoes
Subway
Gloria Jeans

The town square looks neat! Nicely done.
It's too bad that the shops are uninteresting...
I wanna see something that only Auburn can offer.

Unfortunately, Australia is the most franchised nation in the world per capita (three times the rate of the US actually!), so finding independent stores anywhere (especially in the homogenous world of shopping centres) is getting harder and harder.

Whoops. In this pic that under-construction high-rise to the far right is NOT part of Auburn Central.

EDIT: YES IT IS. Apologies for the error.

http://www.auburncentral.com.au

And this weekend, Bec Cartwright is supposed to be appearing to sign autographs. Personally, I reckon management went a little too far with the marketing & promotion for such a small project (retail-wise).

The celebrations are going on all this week. They are even playing adverts announcing the opening of the complex on the radio.

The Parramatta Eels will be there between 5pm and 6pm tonight, and the MIX Streetteam will be there tomorrow between 3pm and 7pm. Bec Cartwright was also mentioned. She will be there at 12pm on Saturday.
