GEOX takes big step in Malaysia

GEOX S.p.A., which specialises in “breathable” rubber-soled shoes, will open 10 outlets in Malaysia over the next two years, chairman Mario Moretti Polegato said.

He is visiting Kuala Lumpur today and will survey potential sites such as the Suria KLCC.

GEOX, whose local partner is Larrie Shoes, opened its first store last year at Lot 10, Jalan Sultan Ismail. Two more outlets are slated to open this month at the Pavilion, Jalan Bukit Bintang, and The Gardens at Mid Valley City.

The brand is present in 68 countries. It is listed on the Milan Stock Exchange and achieved a first half consolidated sales of 370 million euros (290 million euros in first half 2006).

Besides its international collection, GEOX offers specific designs adapted to the local taste. The shoes are priced in the mid- to high-end range and good demand is expected from customers who no longer have to shop for the brand overseas.

Polegato, who was originally supposed to take over his family’s wine-making business, is famous for turning his innovation into a commercial success.

He was a speaker at yesterday’s forum on Innovation and New Technology: Gotta have them, but money well-spent?

At the forum, Sybase Inc chairman, CEO and president John Chen said driving innovation nowadays had become a necessity.

In the rush to success, companies should realise that time, foresight and a nurturing environment were required for great ideas to develop.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Jamaludin Jarjis posed a question on whether it would be “idea before market or vice-versa.”

Chen said: “To me, it would be idea first. The creation of an idea requires at least seven different ingredients for success.”

The Government should not intervene while ideas were developing but protect these ideas in terms of proprietary technology and standards, he said.

At a press conference later, DHL Express CEO John Mullen said intellectual capabilities and talent in emerging economies required nurture and protection from Government before they became “gobbled up.”

In terms of developing “blue ocean” strategies, each country should harness its resources to be a leader in a given field, said Gregory Balestrero, CEO of Project Management Institute, a leading association for the project management profession.

For instance, India capitalised on its strength as the largest English-speaking nation to develop an outsourcing industry that contributes 35% to its gross domestic product.

Step out in style
by Alexander Tan

GUESS Inc., one of the world’s leading lifestyle brands of apparel and accessories, has just announced the expansion of free standing footwear stores into Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This innovative retail concept offers a complete range of styles for women including handbags and footwear. These Guess Footwear stores are slated to open by the end of September 2007 in The Gardens, Mid Valley and Pavilion KL.

The design concept of the footwear store is clean, simple and inviting. Inspired by specialised boutiques, the Guess Footwear store features exclusive products displayed on contemporary fixture concepts. The interior
of the store blends sleek and modern elements such as floor-to-ceiling mirrors, modern chandeliers, glass shelves and chrome decor to highlight each product’s unique style. All merchandise is displayed in a minimalist style, allowing customers to focus on the details of each product. This environment provides a fun yet elegant shopping experience for customers of all ages.

“We wanted to be at the forefront of the accessory market around the globe,” says Paul Marciano, chief executive officer of Guess Inc. “We make passionate products for passionate women. The international woman is not only fashion forward, but she looks for accessories that have real meaning.
The trend-setting woman of Kuala Lumpur is one of our fastest growing fans and she really understands our product line.”
The first Guess Footwear store was born in Paris in March 2007 and has since expanded into Milan. There are now plans to have five free standing Guess Footwear stores within Asia by the end of 2007.

EpiCentre

The centre of all things Apple

The biggest consumer retail centre for Apple products is set to open in the new Pavilion Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Dubbed the EpiCentre, the store boasts a total floorspace of 3,300sq ft and will open its doors on Sept 20 this year.

Although stores with similar goals have been set up in the country before, the management of EpiCentre are banking on their experience from its stores in Singapore, which have been awarded Best Point of Sales, Asia 2006 by Apple.

"We aspire to be the ultimate Apple Digital Lifestyle hub where people can come to learn and exchange their experiences with one another," said Jimmy Fong, director for Afor Sdn Bhd, which manages the EpiCentre.

The company aims to offer Mac and iPod users a true one-stop shopping experience.

For starters, Fong said the store is going to have over a thousand third-party Mac and iPod accessories from a hundred different brands — the largest selection in the country.

And if you don't find what you're looking for, the store will do what it can to get it for you.

The EpiCentre will also be divided into various sections for demonstrating Apple products such as the iPod, consumer and professional Macs, film- and audio-editing solutions and more.

And with all that floorspace, there's even room for a 20-seat training centre with planned seminars to teach Mac users how to get the most out of their Macs.

Apart from products, the store will also feature a value-added service called iConcierge — a customer service centre that provides both pre- and post-sales enquiries, including general helpdesk-type assistance (i.e. Setup, troubleshooting, backup and maintainence) and even a trade-up programme for used iPods and Macs. — CHRIS CHONG

Still looks empty inside. Just like Mid-valley when they opened in Nov 1999.

Why even bother opening on 9/20? They announced this date over a year ago. When I called pavilion this week, I was told 70% of the stores will be open. It doesn't look like it.

James, How do you get access to the pavilion and the gardens the take pictures?

All this hype about the opening and all I see is an empty mall. Looking forward to Parkson though.

It is almost there but as you see it, not all d tenants schedule on the opening date for various reasons. Even suria klcc was half emptied on the first day. Most of the retailers target year end opening for bigger turnaround to cover the renovation cost incurred faster. This is why we hv 3 malls in kl pushing so hard for sept opening so tht these retailers could move in time for the year end festivals.
