Iran to produce 50t caviar by 2012

Iran has gained access to new caviar breeding technology.
Iran can produce a total of 50 tons of caviar in five-years through a program based on new technology of farming sturgeon, official says.

According to the head of Iran's Fisheries Research Institute, Iran has five different kinds of sturgeon.

Abbassali Motallebi noted that since Iran's caviar reserves decline every year, Iran is trying to establish a gene bank for caviar fish in order to make use of the genetic potential available to prevent extinction of the caviar fish.

"Since production of caviar under natural conditions is declining and the world is moving toward breeding caviar fish, Iran is also going to adopt and keep pace with the trend," he added.
