Nice pics and buildings, I'm just curious, are there any pics showing the hotel in relation to other buildings in Lagos?

Is it located near the downtown or in a random residential neighborhood?

Because Downtown Lagos REALLY needs a facelift!

Construction has started

Developer, firm in court over Lagos Intercontinental Hotel 'stop work' order

Quote:
A LAGOS High Court, which ordered a halt on further construction work at the site of the proposed five star Intercontinental Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos, while ruling on May 20, 2008 in a suit filed by an oil and gas service firm on allegations of damage to its property and threat to the lives of its employees, will resume hearing in the case this morning.

The claimant, Wilbros Nigeria Limited in its statement of claims dated April 28, 2008 and signed by its counsel, Mr. Seni Adio of the law firm of Copley partners, had alleged that construction of the hotel located at 54A and 54B Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, by I.T.B. Nigeria Limited has caused great damages to its official and residential premises located next to the construction site.

Ruling on the application brought by way of Writ of Summons, the trial Judge, Justice Opeyemi Oke in granting the order of Interlocutory Injunction, restrained the defendant, its agents, affiliates, privies, directors, officers, contractors, successors or assigns to immediately cease and desist from any further construction activity on the property until the defendant has provided and paid for comparable and suitable alternative accommodation acceptable to the claimant pending the final determination of the case.

Wilbros, in its claims had averred that when early in 2007 the defendant (I.T.B. Nigeria Limited) began construction on the site, the work did not create any cause for concern for it, but when approximately April, 2007 the claimant noticed some cracks on the exterior walls of its apartments directly abutting the construction, it contacted the defendant and notified it of the cracks on the building.

The defendant, it further claimed, responded by coming to its (claimant) premises to inspect the building and based on the its inspection, it admitted responsibility for the damage done to the building resulting from the movement of the soil due to the excavation by the defendant company.

The claimant further averred that, in recognition of the damages caused to the premises, the defendant proffered to take corrective action to prevent further damage to the premises and that due to its (claimant) concern for the safety of its employees, it moved its offices away from the affected side of the building and relocated its employees to a new accommodation.

The claimant also averred that the defendant agreed to pay for the relocation of the claimant's employees to alternative residential accommodation, but after making certain payments for the relocation, the defendant abruptly ceased making further payments.

Following the stoppage of further payment for its employees' new accommodation, the claimant in its statement also averred that it took up the payment of the employees' accommodation which payment has been made in the excess N20 million.

Wilbros averred that, "but for the defendant's tortuous conduct, it would not have incurred any of the expenses nor suffered any of the damages alleged and more importantly, the claimant has already incurred and paid in excess of N140 million to rent office space at its current temporary location."

Besides, the claimant also averred in its statement of claim, "the building project has become a bomb waiting to explode and presents an imminent danger to the claimant and its employees."

In order to protect the interest of the defendant, which was yet to file its defence, the court further ruled that the claimant shall enter into an undertaking as to damages in favour of the defendant if it turns out that the order made on May 20, 2008 should not have been made. The matter was thereafter adjourned till today, June 2, 2008 for further hearing.

There has been in a major reform in the construction market in Lagos recently. A couple of High rises Under Construction in the CBD have been halted due to poor construction practices, it is unfortunate that the Intercontinental is moving so slowly, with all these court issues.

Looks like it will be Completed by 2010

The Current Hotel proposals for the State are as follows, there really is a demand for such hotels.

very true, but Lagos needs even more than this, I want to see the city rub shoulder with cities like Mexico-City, Sao Paulo or Bangkok in terms of hotels, shopping , entertainement, restaurants and bars etc.

Well, it's good news that the government is ensuring that the construction is done properly.

Very good looking hotel. Hope it will have a knock on effect on the shabby surrounds.

Shabby what, please? Victoria Island has no shabby surroundings, it is not Ikeja.

I think it's just reference to the first rendering, which upon closer look is not actually a underdeveloped area, but its just a darkened picture.

Real Estate is present, I see Middle Class housing, and from what I have heard of the area, a lot has been built there.

Yes it's underdeveloped by grandeur standards, but it's actually one of the hotspots of Lagos.

I agree, it's one of the places to be in Lagos but there's far more work to be done there.

It's on emporium but the information povided there has not been updated. The floor count on emporium says 17 while the one on the news is 22.

I would be very glad to see pictures coming up here as you said you will try to upload soon. That's the cladding is going to be glitz all through. That would be nice for a hotel of its kind!
