Miami needs...

In terms of urbanity, Miami's Downtown is too far away to reach the urban feeling we are looking for. What would you like to see in MIami?

That would be awsome, but once dead the city will stay the same.

About dog parks, how can a city waste money on building parks for dogs to do their "you know what"?
As long as you have strict enforcement on owners picking up after their pooches..., I don't believe it to be a waste of money when we consider how many dog owners will be living (permanantly or temporarily) in Marquis, TMP, 900 Biscayne, Marina Blue, Loft 1, 2, Paramount Park, Opera Tower, Quantum, etc, etc, etc..., & how many of those dog owners will consider if there is a dog park nearby before buying or renting a condo.

Definitely not. Much of urban South Florida is surprisingly devoid of greenery and lush pockets like Coral Gables or Biscayne Park are the exception rather than the rule. I think the city could be (and should be) FAR greener than it is...and that goes for Broward and Palm Beach as well.

As for dog parks, why not? They're a standard feature in any vibrant urban core across the country and I'd find it hard to believe that all these new buildings have a "no pets" policy. That would run totally contrary to modern trends which routinely allow them.

Actually I think they are permitted in most buildings, some may have weight restrictions but most buildings allow dogs.

I want cats only! I've had my fill of little neurotic dogs barking all the time where I live. Next meeting, I'm going to vote that my condo association allow no dogs. Dogs are for houses with yards. Not condos!

I don't think it is "too far away". Many of the options in the Poll are nice for the icing on the cake, but the #1 thing that Miami's Downtown needs is people living in it.
Three years ago, the #1 thing was residential buildings for people to live in.
These things take time. I walked on Biscayne again this weekend...the holes where the shade trees will be planted are shaping up, and it is now pretty obvious for even those without vision what will be happening on Biscayne in a year from now.
People are starting to move in. They will demand and get businesses.
Once the people move in, they will demand things like plazas (Lincoln Road was a vehicular road at one time).
To reiterate, the number one thing that downtown Miami needs right now is people.

It would be so much fun to bulldoze through DWNTWN to make diagonal streets! Plus I think we need a roundabout just like Paris's Arc de Triomphe. What a rush it would be to take a spin around with the rudest drivers in the country!
WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

That was a project about a year ago... All of the major streets had royal palms planted throughout. Coral Way, Bird Rd, Miller, Sunset, and Kendall and then the avenues had royal palms one right after the other. Downtown, from photos in another thread, has already spruced up the marina with plams, and soon to come, Biscayne Boulevard. I think royal palms (brought here from Cuba) give Miami an edge that neither New York or Chicago have... They are what makes Miami, Miami.

There are two types of Royal Palms used here, a native Florida variety and Cuban Variety. The ones they typically plant are the Cuban ones, but most are grown locally in the tree farms of South Dade. You'll see many naturally occurring royal palms in the Everglades and Big Cypress. The Cuban variety has the hump in the middle. All that rice and beans I think.
