That's a Mercator Map projection. Its the worst possible way to display Pakistan on the World Map, since is distorts our size relative to the Northern countries.

A better representation is the Galls-Peters projection: It distorts the shape of the Northern countries, but shows the true size of all nations.

Shows how truly massive Africa is.

Actually I never heard of these terms "Mercator Map" and "Galls-Peters" before. Apart from just looking them up on the net, just now. So in short you mean that a Galls-Peters projection is better as it shows the actual size of all the nations. Even though it misshapes the northern countries. Where as a Mercator Map projection makes the northern countries look bigger then they actually are? Yeah? I still don't get it.

Its difficult representing the spherical Earth on a flat rectangular map.
There are different ways of doing so, hence why we end up with these different projections.

The Mercator map has been accused of having a Northern Bias (it was popularly used throughout the Cold War), since it diminishes the importance of the poorer Southern Nations.

Greenland up by the North pole is shown to be as large as Africa, when in reality it is less than a 1/10th in size.

I'm still on the hunt for more maps-is there a population map for the 1998 census?

You're a geography teacher? Cool! I love Geography, especially Human Geography. Physical Geography, not so much. But still like it!

Out of the 5 main subjects that you are taught in school (English, Maths, Science, Geography & History) I only choose to continue studying Geography at college!

1998 census? Forget that. I posted one about the 2008 census a couple of pages back.

I remember James Bond's plane crashed in a desert, and he decided to head towards Pakistan instead of India.

The image reveals pollution hotspots above cities and even shipping lanes.

Flag map - I wish they hadn't omitted Pakistan's white stripe

Pakistans position on Western Sahara conflict

Glad we're not fanatical Wahabis

List of countries by homicide rate per year per 100,000 inhabitants (pleasantly surprising and kind of unbelieveable)

Countries where the capital is not the largest city

The Muslim World

And just to illustrate the earlier point that northern countries appear larger on maps

Great Work Brighty!!

Love the above maps, esp. the one with flag collage & Islamic sects ones. Didn't know the sects and their spread around the world.

Interesting that Austria & France fall in the same percentage category of muslim population as that of India.

I've seen this map loads of time. And whenever I see this map, it always raises this same question inside of me. On the Atlases sold in Pakistan, is Western Sahara shown to be a part of Morocco or is it shown to be separate? Do any of you guys know?

In my life I've only ever met one Morocan guy. He would insist on Western Sahara being a part of Morocco. But the maps in the UK show Western Sahara to not be a part of Morocco. So I just thought that is wasn't. He was also really annoying and a pain in the ass, so that didn't help his case of convincing me that Western Sahara is a part of Morocco. I personally believe that Western Sahara has been illegally occupied by Morocco and should get independence. But what do the Pakistani maps show?

Pakistan's emissions = Nevada's + Utah's

Pakistan's GDP = Arkansas's GDP
