Information from the same source as that in Slovakian highways thread - http://www.nsrr.sk/operacne-programy/doprava/ Hopefully there are going to happen big things in railway transport in Slovakia.

Code:
P. č.	Názov projektu
1.	Modernizácia žel.trate Nové Mesto nad Váhom-Púchov
2.	Modernizácia trate Púchov-Žilina
3.	Žilina Teplička, zriaďovacia stanica
4.	Modernizácia trate Žilina-Krásno n.Kysucou

Summary: We will have completely modernized railway Bratislava - Žilina on 160 km/h and partially railway Žilina - Svrčinovec/CZ (between Žilina and Krásno nad Kysucou) and railway Žilina - Košice (between Kysak and Košice). There is also planned modernisation railway Bratislava - Kúty/CZ between Czech border and Kúty what is impressive 6 km, but to be honest it's enough, because the rest of the railway to Bratislava is good. There should be electrified railway Devínska Nová Ves - Marchegg(A).

Code:
P. č.	Názov projektu
1. Prímestské dvojpodlažné súpravy - obstaranie
2. Vozidlá pre medziregionálnu dopravu - obstaranie
Summary: Yes, your eyes are OK, we should buy suburban doubledeck and "interregional" (or how to translate it) carriages.

Code:
P. č.	Názov projektu
1.	Železničné napojenie letiska M.R. Štefánika, vrátane zdvojkoľajnenia trate Bratislava Petržalka - Kittsee a v úseku Bratislava hl.stanica - Bratislava Nové Mesto
2.	Nové železničné spojenie Bratislava Predmestie - Bratislava Petržalka
3.	Bratislavský integrovaný dopravný systém
4.	Integrovaný dopravný systém koľajovej osobnej dopravy na území mesta Košice a v košickom regióne (IDSK)

Summary: This is mainly about Bratislava. There will be new connection of M.R. Štefánik airport with the railway network, second track on railway Bratislava Petržalka - Kittsee(A) and Bratislava Main station - Bratislava Nové Mesto. Nex connection of Bratislava Predmestie - Bratislava Petržalka (tunnel under Danube). Integrated transport system.

In Košice also integrated railway system (KORID).

Let's move this discussion to more appropriate thread.

We won't lost strategic position because we don't have any. Transship centers (prekladiská) are in Romania, Hungary and Poland as well and I can't see that our Ukrainian border is profiting from transport much.

Another thing is there is motorway in Hungary just few km from Ukraine border and Poland motorway network is also approaching to Ukrainian border so majority of road transport will choose Hungary and Poland instead of Slovakia. We can, on the other hand, get majority of railway transport. Yes, after we will finish both Southern and Northern motorway/expressway corridors (D1, R1 and R2) we can become great competition for Poland and Hungary in road transport as well, but it could take a lot of time.

It depends what will that railway look like.

1. If it will be just another track next to present one, than the profit will be bigger transport and Bratislava along with Vienna will become much more important traffic hub than it is now. For more see This link. Negative would be a bit smaller business in Čierna nad Tisou.

2. I hope there will be brand new railway combined with modernized sections of the old one. This would cause the previously mentioned "hub effect" and it could bring big development to whole Southern Slovakia which could become as important traffic corridor as Považie. Negative is again Čierna nad Tisou.

But, is that Čierna nad Tisou really that big negative? Transport through Ukrainian border has 45% share on overall transport of ZSSK Cargo. In 2006 it was 19,090 tons from overall 43,574 tons of international cargo. From that via PPS Čierna nad Tisou goes only 6,320 t on wide gauge and 1,698 on normal gauge. The biggest share has PPS Maťovce (11,072 t) which will be untouched by this project as well as normal gauge transport via PPS Čierna nad Tisou.

I recommend to read those PDFs:

Ich slávnostné uvedenie do prevádzky bude 10. mája tohto roku.

Touto technológiou by mala vzniknúť bratislavská halová stanica Filiálka a stanica Letisko.

Podľa plánov bude nová dopravná tepna v Bratislave vytvorená podzemným železničným spojením medzi existujúcimi železničnými stanicami Predmestie a Petržalka.

Railway tunnel in Bratislava should be built until 2016. Whole project of TEN-T corridor in Bratislava passed EIA approval so it's closer and closer to real construction. There will be built also connection of Bratislava airport to railway network and second track between station Bratislava Petržalka and Austria and many many more. I will bring more info tomorrow since there are tons of information on http://eia.enviroportal.sk/zoznam?q=...res=0&oblast=0 and I don't have enough time today.

I know I'm a bit late, but here you go.

Some facts and figures about TEN-T Bratislava:

This project contains:
  1. connection of TEN-T corridors to Bratislava railway network
  2. connection of M.R. Štefánik airport to railway network
  3. improvement of railway connection between Bratislava and Vienna
  4. cooperation with the system of public transport in Bratislava

  • cost of the project is estimated on SKK 17-20 billion (EUR 520-615 million)
  • construction should start in 2011 and end in 2016
  • the most expansive and the most important part of the project is approximatelly 7 km long tunnel under the city center and Danube river
  • another tunnel will be used also to connect the airport with railway network
  • in the main tunnel are proposed three undergound stops (Slovany, Nivy, Bratislava Centrum) and one underground station (Bratislava filiálka)
  • at the airport is proposed one undergound station (Bratislava letisko)
  • some lines which are now with only one track will be upgraded on double track lines
  • some lines which are not electrified will be electrified
  • on Petržalka side of the railway tunnel is proposed connection with public transport system in Petržalka
  • there are various variants of the project which can be still modified, EIA study prefers orange variant

We certainly cannot expect better trains from ŽSR, but we can from ŽSSK. Just check this my post: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...&postcount=304 There should be bought suburban doubledecker carriages and also "interregional" carriages from EU money.

don't know if this has been discussed here, but are there plans to connect Vienna Airport with Bratislava using a direct train service? Since most people are probably traveling into West Slovakia/Bratislava region through that airport (for now at least), there should be quite a lot of demand for such a train service I guess.

Part of the TEN-T project is upgrading of both railways to Austria. Track Devínska Nová Ves - Marchegg will be electrified and Petržalka - Kittsee will be upgraded on double track line. Part of this project is also connection of Bratislava airport with railway network so thanks to this project there will be direct train service between M.R Štefánik airport in Bratislava and Schwechat airport on Vienna.

And yes, demand will grow:

http://ekonomika.sme.sk/c/3857934/Ze...t-miliard.html

Slovak railways started public competition for the construction company which would modernize railway Nové Mesto nad Váhom - Zlatovce (part of the city of Trenčín), its cost is estimated on SKK 8,887 billion (EUR 275,75 million) without VAT. This section is part of the moderinzation project of railway Nové Mesto nad Váhom - Púchov on speed 160 km/h. There will be the tunnel mentioned few pages above.

that looks good! So there will be a high-speed rail link from Vienna through its airport and Bratislava to Bratislava's airport? When will that be operational, by 2013?

I've seen there is a modernisation underway between Bratislava and
Nové Mesto nad Váhom currently. Could you tell me when that would be complete and what time savings will that bring compared to the present situation? I guess the trains run much slower than 160 km/h today?
