Poze excelente mihai.
Din pacate, ma cuprinde tristetea cand fac o comparatie intre pozele de azi ale Galatiului si cele de epoca.

Grrr, i hate the commies, they've destroyed our country

Thank you Mihai for the incredible and amazing photos so far (we should switch into EN cause a lot of people read the Photo section of the Romanian forum). It is so sad to see that a very prosperous and western looking city 60 years ago was distroyed by war and then by communists!!!) Galati was truly western looking city and had a magnificent architecture and a very strong economy in the interbellum period! You cannot see today so many passenger ships as you can see in those pictures. And all those beautiful houses and streets that remind you of the mediteranean coasts, they're all gone, distroyed.

The city, as Geno said, will never recover from the distruction of its looks but also from the destruction of the people and generations who built all that. So sad, very sad.

PS: I think that on top of the rubble of all those streets and quarters, the communists built all those blocks of flats that you can see in this picture now:

Yes Le Clerk, that is were a part of the cities centre used to be.

This is a map of the actual city, and i drew it's limits as they were 70 years ago.
I also delimited the part which was destroyed(95%) Galati's hart and centre,in which many of those beatifull streets, buildings used to stand.

After WW2 the reconstruction of the town ,economicly and urbanisticly was done slowly,on a long period of time because Romania was due to pay a huge war debt to Russia, imposed by the soviets.
Internal market and trade fell dramiticly because of the difficult conditions in which the port and railway worked, but also because foreing and local merchants left being threatened by communism.
The city revitalization will take place crossing many steps, the first one being the construction of a giant steel plant ,beginning from 1962.The shipyard despite being of world class construction technics was left on second spot.
The growing demographics ( Galati’s population grew in just 20 years from 95 thousand (1956)to 240 thousand, mainly because of migration, people all around the country came because they were offered jobs and homes) had a big impact on urban construction, which had a very fast progress, and was made in total disharmony with local architecture.

I’ll present to you now some pictures from that period:

The tower constructed on the banks of the Danube has at the 100 meter point a restaurant called Perla Dunarii(The Danube Perl).

You can also find a pole for it here :

Some other pictures of the Botanical Garden in Galati ("stolen" pictures).
And some more info:
The plans for the Botanical Garden in Galati date back to the 70's but they only started building and arranging the whole thing in the first half of the 90's. It has a surface of 18 ha (the one in Cluj has 14 ha, the one in Jibou 24 and the one in Iasi 100 ha, or so I've heard).
It is located near the Danube river bank, very close to the ferry(Trecere bac) and the Faleza so if you take a walk starting from the Tiglina entrance you come out at the end close to the faleza, a very nice looooooooooooooong walk. As you may notice in these pictures the end near the Faleza is right on the edge og Tiglina valley(rapa Tiglinei) which used to be a golf on the Danube, the one Alex was talking about 1 or 2 pages back .
The Botanical Garden is also home to the Planetarium and the Museum of Natural Sciences. The main building is supposed to be extended with some green houses(the skeletons on the right) since the current green houses are too small and improvised anyway.
There is still a lot of landscaping left to do, but this is mainly due to the fact that funding isn't that great and especially because the garden is still very young as compared to the ones in Bucharest, Cluj or Iasi.
In spite of that it's a nice oasis worth visiting. The entrance fees are 4,5 ron for adults and 1,5 ron for students, plus 15 ron for taking pictures(I took outdoor pictures without paying but nobody saw me).
My personal recommendation is that, if you pass through any Romanian city with a botanical garden, VISIT IT!
P.s. lemon beer is not beer, it's juice

Pictures of the "japanese garden" in the Botanical Garden. The pond is smaller than the one in Cluj and it doesn't have that wooden construction from which the stupid national team football players threw rocks at the stupid journalists but it's still a very nice place to visit. One of my favourite.
