Asima scooped her second with 26th minute free kick as winners led 3-0 at interval.

Stick in our throat

By A. Majid

Last week, the Pakistani hockey team put up another disap pointing show by finishing fourth at the Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament in Ipoh, Malaysia. One wonders what’s going to happen at the Beijing Olympics.
The team, led by fullback Zeeshan Ashraf, reached Malaysia on May 5, and according to the programme, the team was scheduled to fly from Kuala Lumpur for its European tour.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation had planned a five-nation tour starting with Malaysia, followed by the European trip to Germany, France, Belgium, rounding off with the fournation tournament in Dublin (Ireland). The expensive 42-day tour is aimed at team build up and regaining the gold medal that it last won for a third time 24 years ago at the 1984 Los Angles Olympic. The tour ends on June 15, and the squad leaves for Beijing in the first week of August to take part in the Olympic Games.

Argentina and India, who have failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics, met in the keenly contested final of the Azlan Shah cup. Argentina managed to win the tournament for the first time in its second appearance in the event defeating India by a golden goal in the sudden death phase of the match after playing a 1-1 draw in the regulation time.

India, out of the Olympic Games for the first time in 80 years, had 12 young (junior) players in its side. The Indian squad was virtually outplayed (1-5) by Argentina in the league match but later on India put up a better performance to reach the final of the event by beating Pakistan and Malaysia. On both occasions the margin was 2-1.

In its first leg of the tour, Pakistan’s performance turned out to be quite humiliating because it was the highest ranked of the seven teams that took part in the event. The green shirts should have won the Azlan Shah cup which they had last won five years ago.

Pakistan is among the top six teams for the Beijing Olympics. It was the hot favourite side to win the Ipoh tournament since the reigning Olympic champion, Australia (ranked No. 2 in the world), did not enter the tournament to defend the title. Moreover, in the absence of other topranking teams [Germany (No.1), the Netherlands (3) Spain (4) and South Korea (5)], Pakistan had a fairly good chance to win back the Azlan Shah tournament. Apart from Pakistan, the three Beijing Olympic qualifiers at Ipoh were New Zealand (No. 10), Belgium (12) and Canada (15).

Hockey pundits are of the view that in the absence of the world’s five leading teams, the 17th edition of the Azlan Shah cup was not a grade 1 event, and Pakistan’s failure is a matter of grave concern.

Pakistan, though, began the tournament on a promising note by beating last year’s runner-up Malaysia (32) in the first match, followed by an impressive 6-3 victory against New Zealand, and played a draw (3-3) against Argentina in the third match. It secured seven points from three matches and subsequently increased its points tally to 10 after registering a 2-1 win against Canada. But then Belgium gave an extraordinary performance with a surprising 5-3 result against Pakistan. However, Pakistan still had a chance needing just one point for a place in the final when the green shirts met India’s youthful side, but lost the match (2-1). Had Pakistan played a drawn game it would have reached the final.

As a result, Pakistan’s hopes for getting into the final rested on Malaysia’s victory against India on the last day of the single league matches on May 17. India defeated Malaysia 2-1 and reached the final, and Pakistan was out of the race.

Pakistan suffered another humiliation when New Zealand beat it in the match for the third position.

The final standings were: 1Agentina, 2-India, 3- New Zealand, 4Pakistan, 5-Canada, 6- Belgium, and 7-Malaysia. The points table at the end of league matches Played won drawn lost GF GA Points Argentina 6 4 2 0 19 8 14 India 6 4 0 2 17 16 12 Pakistan 6 3 1 2 18 16 10 N. Zealand 6 3 0 3 14 14 9 Belgum 6 2 0 4 15 17 6 Canada 6 1 2 3 17 12 5 Malaysia 6 1 1 4 9 16 4

Pakistan to include four overseas players for SAFF championship

LAHORE, May 26: Four players of Pakistani origin settled in England and Germany will be contesting for the top honour under the newly-appointed captain Zahid Hameed in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) championship to be held jointly by Sri Lanka and Maldives from June 3.

Atif Bashir from the Welsh Premier League Berlin, Germany, will be making his debut for Pakistan while Adnan Farooq of the Tranmere Rovers Club, Zeeshan Rehman of Queen’s Park Rangers and Kashif Siddiq from Eckerd College, Florida, have represented the country earlier as well.

“Atif’s entry has further brightened Pakistan’s chances in the championship as he, like the other three foreign-based players, also happens to be in perfect form,” secretary Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) Ahmed Yar Lodhi told Dawn after the federation’s announcing a 20-member team for the contest.

While Atif and Kashif have already joined the ongoing training camp for the championship, Adnan and Zeeshan are expected to follow suit by May 28.

Pakistan, who are bronze-medallists of the 1997 championship at Kathmandu, have been placed in Group ‘A’ along with four-times gold medallist India, Maldives and Nepal, who will be playing their matches at the National Stadium in Maldives’s capital Male.

“The overseas players played their part brilliantly enabling us to achieve a score-less tie with the Asian powerhouse and champions Iraq in the 19th World Cup Qualifier in Damascus last year and their presence in the side this time will hopefully help Pakistan earn laurels,” he added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan coach Akhtar Mohiuddin stated that Atif’s inclusion should provide strength to the national side’s defence and midfield.

Atif returned to the Welsh Premier League in January 2008, switching from the Haverfordwest Welsh League side ENTO Aberaman. His previous spells include 19 league appearances with Afan Lido and Grange Quins clubs in the Top Flight.

Born in Germany, Atif was the youngster Cardiff City trainee when he moved to Wales. He has also played in the Welsh League for Maesteg Park and Taffs Well.

Meanwhile, Zahid, who led the Pakistan under-21 team in the Asia Cup qualifying round where his side beat Singapore in a home and away series, has been named captain in place of the injured Mohammad Essa, who aggravated an old thigh injury in the recently held National Football Challenge Cup in Karachi.

Squad:

Goal-keepers: Syed Sultan Ali, Bilal Rafiq (PIA).

Defenders: Samar Ishaq, Mohammad Ahmed (KRL), Naveed Akram (Wapda), Mohammad Imran (Army), Zeeshan Rehman (Queen’s Park Rangers), Mohammad Irfan, Nasrullah Khan (PIA).

Midfielders: Farooq Shah, Abdul Aziz (NBP), Adnan Farooq Ahmed (Tranmere Rovers), Atif Bashir (Haverfordwest County AFC), Jadid Khan (Afghan FC, Chaman), Imran Niazi (vice-captain), Zahid Hameed (captain), Kashif Siddiqui (Eckerd College, Florida).

Strikers: Arif Mehmood (Wapda), Mohammad Qasim (KRL), Asif Mehmood (Navy).

Officials: Akhtar Mohiuddin (coach), Mohammad Habib, Sajjad Mehmood (Assistant Coaches), Noman Ibrahim (GK coach), Kamran Mehdi (physiotherapist).

I am actually glad to see that pic and the one previous...you can wear shorts or naqab. Thats a good thing that both are welcome and that her naqab didn't prevent her from playing.

LMFAO @ the girl with the burqa

And yeah, Tanvir and Gul were the only Pakistanis to do well in the IPL. Glad to know Tanvirs team won, they looked like the best side.

I heard they're starting the PPL in 2009. Can't wait. I'll go see matches at the stadium as many times as I can.
