Church of the day (17/06) is from Tallinn
Toomkirik (Dome church, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin in Tallinn) ![]() ![]() This church is the oldest in the city, being first established by Danes in the 13th century, around 1219. It went from a wooden to a stone church already in 1229 when the Dominican monks arrived. The monks did never really finish the building and it wasn't until the 14th century that the church started to come to its own. The exterior dates from the 15th century while the spire dates from the 18th century. A fire in 1684 damaged the building severely but it was soon rebuilt much as it had been before. By the way: you may notice that there is a lack of Latvian churches on this thread. I found a bunch of Lithuanian churches on a previous thread about churches and some Finnish and Estonian ones as well, on Latvia, however, I haven't found much, so we need some help from Latvia. I call on all Latvians to contribute here, show us your stuff. Last edited by joamox; June 24th, 2008 at 06:17 AM. |
