I dont know what you mean by "board shopping". I never travel by plane, but we can certainly use mobile phones when using trains, taxis or buses.

Wow, where does the bill come from? Is it charged onto you're monthly phone bill or do you need to buy a special phone or something?

They mix metro and tramways in the same article about Madrid metro...

I corrected my previous post: 13 metro lines instead of 14.

And there are 3 tramway lines with 27.78 km. in total.

It is attached to all cellular phones.

Madrid stands a chance. Tokyo I think should be qualified out on the base of not having any nightly public transport, which is astonishing for a city its size.

You scan the integrated chip inside mobile phone.
I don't know if it's Japan-only thing or not, though.

As for the thread topic, I think the system with the best quality should be the one with moderate (or no) rush hours. Tokyo clearly fails on that.

PS.
I remembered there's also Mobile T-money in South Korea. It seems these two (another being Osaifu-Keitai compliant systems, whth variations such as Mobile Suica, Mobile Nagasaki Smart Card or Mobile e-card) are the only contactless mobile phone payment systems currently in use.

I voted Madrid. London's is actually much better than many give it credit, but its age, lack of air con and the congestion of the roads means that Madrid's transport system is frankly superior.

I still know where I'd prefer to live though

PS I've noticed that the London underground is piloting a similar mobile charging system on the circle line. Anyone know anything about this. Might have to 'Ask Tubeman'

I voted for Madrid. Fast, confortable, clean and cheap around the clock. For me the best by far.

Here's a good question - how many people answering the above survey have been to all of the above, and what are we considering the bounds of each city?

Some cities have great transportation in their core areas but woefully horrible in the outlying & newer districts.

I picked a European city with a good surface trolley network (useful for short hops within the core), and also a good underground system useful for reasonably fast longer-haul travel.

What baffles me is that people only think about transportation in terms of public transport & mass transit, while that's not even the most used mode of transportation in nearly all urban areas.

Here's a totally geekesque global table of big metro systems all around the world. Totally handcrafted, so if there is an error, please correct it.

* PATH and SIR included
** Yamanote Ring Line, Saitama Railway and Nippori-Toneri Liner included
*** Possibly few doublets, particularly for Tokyo

Tokyo and Osaka have others urban rails systems which serve neighbouring cities. Considering that, their network length approach 1101 mi. and 496 mi.

Then a French study about the quality of different metros of the world. Unfortunately, London is forgotten in the sample (Pékin = Beijing).
