Scarborough-Malvern Light Rail Transit (LRT)
Preliminary Planning for the Class Environmental Assessment This site was last updated July 16, 2008 Background The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and the City of Toronto are undertaking the preliminary planning for an Environmental Assessment Study to identify a potential Light Rail Transit (LRT) corridor connecting Kennedy Subway Station with northern Scarborough. This high quality transit service will begin at Kennedy Subway Station. The preliminary preferred alignment would travel east along Eglinton Avenue, northeast on Kingston Road, north on Morningside Avenue to Sheppard Avenue where it would interline with the proposed Sheppard East LRT. It would proceed westerly to Neilson Road, and north along Neilson Road to the Malvern Town Centre. The LRT route would provide service to University of Toronto Scarborough Campus and Centennial College Ellesmere Campus. Toronto's Official Plan focuses on city-building and creating a Transit City by establishing key avenues for future growth. The official plan and the TTC's Ridership Growth Strategy also stress the importance of making high-quality transit a more attractive option for travel. This proposal was supposed to go up to Finch and serve the community of Morningside Heights north of Finch, but the TTC has decided to veer it west along Sheppard to Neilson and then north to Malvern Town Centre.
Instead, the line should head north along Morningside to Sewells Road (to offer easy access to residents in north eastern Malvern), then west along Sewells road to Malvern Town Centre. |

October 2008 Update
Scarborough-Malvern LRT A feasibility study and report has been completed for this Transit City light rail line, and two public meetings have been held at which staff presented a preferred alignment. This light rail line passes through an environmentally sensitive area on Morningside Avenue south of Ellesmere Road and, therefore, meetings have been held Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Project team members have met with the University of Toronto-Scarborough to discuss possible alignments near and or through the campus, and are participating in the Campus Master Plan Study being undertaken there. The team has also met with Ministry of Transportation staff pertaining to implications of the LRT crossing of the 401 on Morningside Avenue. Near-term project tasks include preparation of design concepts for the LRT interface at Kennedy Station and Malvern Town Centre, identification of property impacts, and evaluation of preliminary construction methods for this line. Work is underway to prepare for the next series of public meetings which will be held later this year. Source: http://www.ttc.ca/postings/gso-comrp...tober_2008.pdf |
