SPLIT - Stadion Poljud (34,448)

HNK Hajduk Split

17x Champion:

1952, 1955, 1971, 1974, 1975,
1979, 1992, 1994, 1995, 2001,
2004, 2005

14x Cup Winner:
1967, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976,
1977, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1993,
1995, 2000, 2003, 2010

5x Supercup: (record)
1992, 1993, 1994, 2004, 2005

Split is host of 2010 World Cup and athletics. Stadium must have minimum 9 (in stead of 8) athletic lanes. What are the plans for Poljud, or do they have any plans at all? I know that today does not have 9 lanes.

Well, this is the stadium

Now, the stadium has 8 lanes track but it needs to be expanded to 9 lanes. That will be possible without major expenses and destroying stands because there is enough space as you can see on photos.

But stadium partially needs renovation and it goes next year. Couple of million euros will be invested.
(things like toilets, new running track, new paint job and other minor things) The most expensive will be new roof plates that will also be replaced.

Also, there was a plan of major transformation for football EC 2012 but we are not hosts as you probably know More than 100 million euros would be invested in transformation. But the project is on hold now.
In that case, the southern side of stadium (under the video screen) would be transformed into the seating area. Therefore, the stadiums capacity would be expanded to almost 50k. The stadium would have rectractable roof.

Nice place, it got renewed last season abit, new lcd screens, new locker rooms and such details.. still can't wait for 2010 to see it completely renewed. Shame that such a bad team has to play there

The most beautiful stadium in Croatia and all of the Balkans. If they ever add that retractable roof it will be very impressive. 50k wow!

It´s a really pretty stadium, retractable roof is a huge project which isn´t really needed right now. But touching up is needed, I think the greenery near the scoring board really looks ugly.

I remember the first time I saw it on TV back in the '80ies, what an impression did it make to me! I believe it is a pioneer stadium designwise, as it was among the first high capacity saddle-shaped stadiums ever built, a shape which now has become something of a mainstream in modern stadia design! Who was the architect? Was he Croatian/Yugo ?

Boris Magas, he applied on tender for new Dinamo stadium with similar design, it was third placed work.

Why would Hajduk finance it when they don't own the stadium?

No way they will create 15.552 extra seats just by filling up that gap where the screen is. Maybe in combination with digging down (and getting rid of the track) or by pulling up the goal stands like Stadium Australia for the 2000 Olympics.

I doubt they will expand it at the end. Getting rid of the track is not an option since they will host the 2010 Athletics World Cup there. 35k will be enough for Atletics World Cup anyway so i think they will only replace the roof. Ofcourse also new athletics pitch and those details

Yes, it is first of it's kind.
The Olympic stadium in Munich and this stadium (built for Mediterranean games) were worlds top at that time. You can see many stadiums being built (Italy Japan Malesia,...) by this pattern.
This one has very complex roof structure that many architects believed it would collapse so rigorous testings were made. Of course, nothing happened, the roof is still on its position
Also, the diameter of cupola of this stadium is very impressive.

couple of extra seat rows also would be added along the stadium.
May I say that original capacity was 55 000 and record attendance 62 000

Original capacity 55.000, record attendance 62.000? Partly standing I suppose.

I think that official capacity was 50 000 and that record attendance was 55 000.

great stadium although i don't think it'll be finished till 2010. simply it's too short period for that kind of grasp.
