![]() Inner Quadrangle of a Nalukettu, or traditional house, Kerala The traditional 'Nalukettu', barring the foundation and floor is made of carved and slotted wood and has a close resemblance to East Asian gabled and thatched structures. In later years, tiles replaced the coconut fronds. The enclosed courtyard or 'ankanam' is usually sunk and therefore called 'Kuzhi (pit) Ankanam'. The protruding roofs of the 'salas' formed shady verandas and protected the rooms from direct sunlight, keeping them cool even on the hottest of days. The inner verandah around the 'ankanam' is open. The outer verandahs along the four sides of the 'Nalukettu' are enclosed differently. While both the western and eastern verandahs are left open, the northern and southern verandahs are enclosed or semi-enclosed. ![]() Somnath Temple, Veraval, Gujarat The Somnath Temple located in the Prabhas Kshetra near Veraval in Saurashtra, on the western coast of Gujarat, India is one of the twelve Jyotirlings (lingas of light) symbols of the God Shiva. It is mentioned in the Rig Veda. Somnath means "The Protector of Moon God". The present structure is the 7th one to be built at the spot, the previous ones having been destroyed by Islamic invaders in 725, 1024, 1297, 1394 and 1706 AD. It is built in the Chalukya style of temple architecture and reflects the skill of the Sompuras, Gujarat's master masons. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, then Home Minister & the first Deputy Prime Minister of India took a pledge on November 13, 1947 for its reconstruction for the seventh time. A mosque present at that site was shifted few miles away. It was completed on December 1 and President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad dedicated it in the service of the nation. The present temple was built by the Shree Somnath Trust which looks after the entire complex of Shree Somnath and its environs Locator Map: Bonus Pics: ![]() ![]() ![]()

![]() Kedarnath Temple, Kedarnath, Utarakhand Copyright Manabendra@flickr Kedarnath temple is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located atop the Garhwal Himalayan range near the river Mandakini in Kedarnath, Uttarakhand in India. Due to extreme weather conditions, the temple is open only between the end of April to start of November. The temple is not directly accessible by road and has to be reached by a 14 km uphill trek from Gaurikund. The temple is believed to have been built by Adi Sankaracharya (8th Century AD) and is one of the twelve Jyothirlingas, the holiest Hindu shrines of Lord Shiva. The older temple existed from the times of Mahabharat, when the Pandavas are supposed to have pleased Shiva by doing penance in Kedarnath. The temple is also one of the four major sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. Locator Map: Bonus Pics: ![]() ![]() Copyright asis k.chatt@flickr ![]() Copyright soumya_maity@flickr

![]() Gwalior Fort, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh (Mega Post )Gwalior Fort (Hindi: ग्वालियर क़िला Gwalior Qila) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India, stands on an isolated rock and contains a number of historic buildings. Built by Raja Man Singh Tomar, of the Tomar dynasty in the 9th century. This formidable structure had the reputation of being one of the most invincible forts of India. The fort has changed hands many times- it has been held by the Tomars, Mughals, Marathas and British, who finally handed it over to the Scindias. Today its a must-see sight on any Gwalior itinerary, and just the ride up to the fort gives you a taste of whats coming: the southern path is bounded by rock faces with intricate carvings of the Jain tirthankars. As you enter the fort, youll see lots more to impress and interest you: palaces and temples, impressive gates and historic water tanks The face is perpendicular and where the rock is naturally less precipitous it has been scarped. Its greatest length from north-east to south-west is 1.5 mile (2.4 km), and the greatest breadth 900 yd (820 m). The rock attains its maximum height of 342 ft (104 m) at the northern end. A rampart, accessible by a steep road, and farther up by huge steps cut out of the rock, surrounds the fort. The citadel stands at the north-eastern corner of the enclosure, and presents a very picturesque appearance with interesting tiles with symbolic images. There are several remarkable mandirs within the fort. One pair of temples, known as the Sas Bahu Ka Mandir, is beautifully adorned with bas-reliefs. This pair of temples was finished in 1093, and, though dilapidated, is still picturesque. There is an impressive Sikh Gurdwara. An older Jain temple has been used as a mosque. Another temple in the fortress of Gwalior is called the Teli-ka-Mandir, or Oilmans Temple. This building was originally dedicated to Vishnu, but afterwards converted to the worship of Siva. It has an unusual configuration: shrine-like in that it has a sanctuary only; no pillared pavilions or mandapa; and a Buddhist barrel-vaulted roof on top of a Hindu mandir. ![]() Guwahati, Assam Copyright dritzcool@flickr Guwahati (Assamese: গুৱাহাটী, Hindi: गुवाहाटी, previously spelled Gauhati) is a major city in eastern India, often considered as the gateway to the North-East Region (NER) of the country and is the largest city within the region. Guwahati's myths and history are extended to several thousands of years. Although a specific time of the city's origin is unknown, with reference from the epics, puranas and from the pages of the explored history, it can be concluded that it is one among the ancient cities in Asia. Epigraphic sources place capitals of many ancient kingdoms in Guwahati. It was the capital of the mythological kings Naraka and Bhagadatta (reference in the Mahabharata). The ancient sakti temple of Kamakhya in the Nilachal hill (also important seat of tantric and Vajrayana Buddhism), Navagraha, the nine planets temple (ancient and a unique temple for astrology) located in Chitrachal Hill and archaeological remains in Basista and many other locations support the mythological characters and the city's ancient past.
