connect two north-south highways on either side of London..and you got a deal :P
actually east of the city to woodstock really isn't needed. the 401 does the job just fine, it's just getting down to there from the north part of the city that's a problem. Having a direct north London to sarnia highway would be beneficial to connect to the 402 around Strathroy. |

living around Hyde Park & Oxford, honestly, getting to the 401 is a major pain in the butt. Honestly it takes 10-20 minutes depending on the time of the day to get to the 402 and Wonderland Ave interchange from our house. No matter what, you're forced to drive across the city to get to the highway, and yeah. That would do wonders for us in the north end. I still think a simple ring road would do better, with maybe a connection along Highway 22 from Strathroy to London, but yeah.

Some form of expressway in the city itself would probably help more as London lacks one.

It's just basically a 402 shortcut from Brantford, Hamilton, and the Niagara Region.
What would be nice is a north-south expressway closer to downtown, but London is too built up to accomodate it, perfect example, Highbury Ave. freeway ending at Hamilton Road. There is talk though that Veterans Memorial Parkway could become that and fill that void. A ring road is what London could use for heavy trucks and other traffic to be re-routed and not have to drive through the city. Another road that should be converted into more of a highway is in the west end, Westdel Bourne. To help those in the west end of London get to the 401 a little easier.

well I can say that i am SUPER glad that plans for a parkway following the thames river from oxford st. southward past wellington wasn't built.
Kinda glad we don't have a highway, really. But a western end highway express to connect to the 402 and 401 would be best, because the east end has that in Veterans Memorial Highway (which was built to connect to the airport) does a whole heck of a lot more than that |

What London needs more than any expressway is a better transit system. So people in the North end have to drive 30 minutes to get to the 401...big deal. That's just something that people in any major city have to contend with (including Toronto, which has several north-south expressways). London is so far behind the rest of the WORLD in public transit that any money they have would be better spent on that.

In Thunder Bay, it takes about an hour to make the 15 kilometre trip from the far north end to the south end. And it's the same bus route serving both areas! That trip is only 25-30 minutes long by car if you go through the city and 20 minutes long by car if you use the expressway.

For the amount of money spent on a new 400 series road, London may actually be better off having that money invested in transit.

But these are two completly different functions. Transit is for intercity travel not highway city to city connections.
The 402 was originally suppose to go from Sarnia across the north end and connect to Woodstock EXACTLY like the map but thehre was way to much political interference from wealth northend Londoners so we have the current configuration which is out of the way for thru traffic and useless for London commuters from places like Strathroy. For south Strathroy it is still way faster to take the old hwy#81 to Mt.Brydges and then to London via Komoka as opposed to having to go north to the 402 for a 10km ride. |
