I have been there many times. A paradise for wind surfing. There was also a windsurfing school at Vasiliki. Is it still there?

Hi,

I want to ask something off-topic. I'm going to Lefkada in September. I've read that the place is good for surfing but I do not surf. We're going to a place in the northern part of the island. Are the winds strong there by that time of the year? We're a couple of families with young kids and we're looking for real relaxation, not sport.

Euxaristo!

Winds are generally not very strong in the Ionian, unlike the Aegean. There is a town to the South, Vasiliki, where most of the surfing takes place. The geographical qualities of the gulf there and the associated winds (not strong ones though) is why it is good for surfing. I learned to surf there, many years ago. Windsurfing by the way, not surfing. No big waves there

Skorpios sold to Dmitry Rybolovlev

*

Looks like I have a new neighbor according to the Greek press:

Επιβεβαίωση της Σίβυλλας για την πώληση του Σκορπιού

Νέος ιδιοκτήτης ο Ρώσος μεγιστάνας, ιδιοκτήτης βιομηχανίας αλλά και της ποδοσφαιρικής ομάδας του Μονακό, Ντιμίτρι Ριμπολόβλεφ

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmitry_Rybolovlev

At least he has a Greek sounding first name and is orthodox...

he didn't buy it.. He actually cant because Onassis at his will said that only a member of his family can actually own the place. So Athena gave it for a long-term lease (μακροχρόνια μίσθωση) to the Russian guy.

If at some point a member of the Onassis family can't or doesn't want to hold the islands it automatically goes to the Greek Government.

Clever dude, Onassis.

"If at some point a member of the Onassis family can't or doesn't want to hold the islands it automatically goes to the Greek Government."

The family members will simply lease them for another 100 years to another party or keep them for themselves. You think they are stupid to just hand them over to the Greek government? The island cannot be moved from its location so its immaterial in real-estate if control is based on purchase or long term lease.

The cleverness here belongs entirely to Athena who pocketed over €100 million if the press is to be believed.

thats why I said "if"

Athena is the last from the Onassis family. So when she dies the island goes back to Greek Government.

Aristotle Onassis never wrote in his will that Skorpios & Sparti islands can never be sold. Onassis wrote in his will that 30 acres around the family graves can't be sold.
The islands were sold for $ 153 million. Russian billionaire Rybolovlev plans to build a luxury hotel & marina on the island of Skorpios.
