Considering that global shit have hit the global fan it was a true pleasure to read the following news:

1. Largest and most modern LOG BUILDING manufacturing unit in eastern Europe will be built in Cesu region (~80km north/east from Riga). Mainly aiming to export and will be know as a brand under the trademark "Dores" their capacity will be 350 houses per year. Investment amount 7 mil EUR

2. SIA “Protein Hair Coating Factory” has acquired the necessary 1mil EUR funding to start up the artificial hair business. Project has been in development from 2001 and the design on the range of the products has been support by several countries - Germany, Italy, Asian countries and others. See for more info here

It will sound absolutely crazy but Dinaz is seriously getting involved in building Oil Refinery in Dugavpils - 500mil Eur investment, 600 jobs created, new bridge over Duagava river built. If this goes through I will be shocked...positively

We are going to have our own "Mažeiķi"? Vow!! Why it isn't in the news? I guess, much protests will come if this is really serious.

Cool! So it will process oil with capacity of 7,5 million tonnes a year and parallel with it it's planned to construct an oil transshipment complex with a capacity of 10 million tonnes. Finally we will overtake Lithuania also in oil processing! j/k

eeem, I would not add so much to the hype - they are talking about this refinery for at least 10 years

Prospects are huge - its not affected, buy global meltdown, but by its own disbalanced economies. So if the world financial market would be stable Baltics would still be in as crap situation as they are now (sorry folks, but its true)

As I said prospects are good because once our own mismanagement will be sorted we will back on our feet regardless what is going on in that mess - in so called "world".

What about St Peter. Any good news so far? Is it going down the drain as well?

Agreed, and I'm afraid our economies are not that different from Iceland no matter what the politicians say. Without any real industries and export we're facing rough times. Fortunately our national debts aren't very large and a balancing loan could be taken out if necessary.

Unlike of Baltic countries, foreign investments in Russia didn't drive the economy. They were Russian companies who borrowed money from abroad for their development, but borrowing money becomes more and more difficult. So the prospects are not brilliant, growth will probably decline to 5% max

I think the oil based economy will collapse and our(the world's) economy won't start growing unless we realise that we need sustainable development and start using other energy resources.

I would rather put the main blame on sellers of hot air - numerous drivers of "financial tools", millions of people reselling properties without much activity behind these deals, countless middleman in industry, public relations, trade, insurance, consultancy business etc. etc. Most of them getting more income than the people doing the real thing - initially with some shyness but lately - even considering that they are the real man behind it all and taking up decision power.
That was just another "pyramid" which starts to collapse over our heads now.

This crisis isn't related to oil and energy sector.

No, but the problems in general are. Globalisation is based on cheap oil. Products are made where it's the cheapest and then transported to their destination. But since India and China are developing faster and faster and demand for oil increases, oil prices go up as well. High oil prices stop globalisation, because transporting goods from China(for example) becomes too expensive. So the oil has fed our economic growth but now it's stopping it. That means if we want to keep on developing, we have to start using renewable resources and limiting our energy consumption.
