Downtown looks clean because of the new asphalt overlay and some buildings that have been repainted but it's a different thing in the "sidewalks." It's more of like a trick in the eye. Seems like the city does not have the political will to organize the street vendors and to enforce discipline. Maayo lang tu pagsugod during the preparations for the ASEAN Summit
.And also, only certain parts of downtown are clean -- if you go to USJR area, Carbon/Freedom Park area, back of Sto. Niño Basilica (where the Sto. Nino vendors are), back of City Hall area, access road from Sto. Niño to Cathedral, then it's a different thing. Preferably, these vendors should be given a decent location (still within downtown and near the tourist sports) nga diha sila magtapok tanan -- murag flea market kumbaga ang concept. The one beside Cosmopolitan Funeral Homes was supposed to be a good start. The weekened markets/bazaars though are an exemption because they are only there during the weekend. I also learned that the Sto. Niño vendors were supposed to be relocated at the VECO Property at the back of the basilica but right now they're occupying the entire sidewalk. Lots of people use this sidewalk especially those riding a 06B jeep and those coming from Magallanes. I also noted nga gipabayaan ang mga "green lamp posts" that were installed during Mayor Garcia's term. Walay continuity kay abi kontra sa politica. Quote:

![]() Yup that's it.. Anyway, the question is as to when exactly was Cebu City called such? And who started it? Could this be during the boom times of Serging when NRA, Mactan Bridge, etc. were built? The SRP was also conceptualized during this time. Also during this time, Cebu's first highrise hotel with the first revolving restaurant in ASIA was built. Department stores were also sprouting such as White Gold (where the rich shop back then) which was then located across the hotel with the revolving restaurant (Ludo and Luym building). Anyway, I think if not for Marcos and other contributing factors and if only the Philippines grew so much in the 50s and 60s and onwards, then the Philippines would really be a first world country now and our cities outside Manila like Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, etc. might have been at par at least with Singapore. The 1950s aerial photo of Cebu attests to the fact that Cebu had significantly recovered from World War II in just a few years. I even think that there's not much difference then back in the 1950s with Manila unlike now where we can really see a big difference if we compare photos of Cebu and Manila. ..
