High Unemployment Rates Weaken Belief in Democracy
A report prepared by the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD) states that the most significant problem facing Turkey is unemployment. The report warns that gradual damage by the high unemployment rate might possibly weaken the belief in democracy in the long run. According to the business world, if a multi-sided initiative is not taken against unemployment today, the problem will get worse. The report points out that the non-agricultural labor force is still around 17 million. Its long-term growth rate is about 3 percent. The report says that in order for the number of unemployed, currently at 2.5 million, not to grow a minimum of 500,000 jobs should be created. The high unemployment level would mean Turkey has the highest unemployment rate in non-agricultural sectors after Poland and Slovakia in the European Union (EU). The TUSIAD report also indicates, "While there is a strong resistance in European public opinion against Turkey's full membership for different reasons, it is impossible even to dream of integration with the EU for a country, which will have a population of 80 million in ten years. The struggle against unemployment should be the number one issue on Turkey's agenda." http://www.zaman.com/?bl=economy&alt=&hn=14974 |
