A major part of Gloucester’s regeneration scheme is back on track after agreement was reached to build hundreds of new homes near the city centre.
House builder Galliford Try and the Homes and Communities Agency announced they are to work together on the redevelopment of the former Gloscat College site in Gloucester. The scheme – a crucial element in Gloucester’s regeneration – ground to a halt earlier this year when the original developer, Bristol-based Edward Ware Homes, pulled out. It was part of the £60 million scheme to develop Gloucester’s Greyfriars city centre site with almost 400 new homes as well as shops and open spaces. It is an element of the £1 billion regeneration of Gloucester over the next 10 years. Galliford Try, the underbidder, has reached agreement with the Homes and Communities Agency (formerly English Partnerships) to develop around 350 new integrated mix-tenure homes, together with employment and community space. English Partnerships bought the college’s old Brunswick Road campus in 2004 for £9 million which helped finance the development of the new Gloucestershire College campus near the Docks. Colin Molton, regional director South West of the Homes and Communities Agency, said: “ I am delighted to confirm Galliford Try, through its regional subsidiary Linden Homes, will form a partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency in delivering a new sustainable community on this important heritage site, which will form part of the greater Greyfriars Regeneration Project. “We will work with local partners to deliver a high-quality integrated development, which achieves the aspirations of the local community, delivers a scheme with a distinctive character of the highest design quality and most importantly creates a sense of neighbourhood and community for residents.” Greg Fitzgerald, chief executive of Galliford Try, said: “Despite the current economic difficulties, particularly in the delivery of new housing, we are excited by the prospect of creating an innovative partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency on this project and are confident that positive progress can now be made in moving this exciting development forward.” |
