We'll get a nice big extension to the Churchill mall as well (currently under way).

Because as was explained before CWG were building the previous design speculatively, when they decided against this & put in for new planning proposals it made sense to build to ground level and pause there it need be as they have done before on some of there other sites.

Now they have planning permission for the tower they can start at ground level & it can be built quickly.

This site has been prepped and placed into suspended animation just like the KPMG Canada Square plot was a few years back. No idea when construction will begin.

^ oh dear you know its bad when CWG resort to those dodgy hard landscaped patterns. One of the best things about the new buildings on the east of the estate was the removal of the so called 'beautification' of the vacant sites...

i think this beautification is probably a good thing over leaving it as it would have been. most people don't like the look of a building site, especially when there is no progress. it hurts even my eyes, and i'm one of the weird bunch who actually loves watching construction.

on a side note, anyone heard anything about the original possible tenant, news international?

AFAIK, they cancelled their plans to relocate on cost grounds and the credit crunch last year...

Doubt anything will happen on this site until 2011 at the earliest.

Can anyone go into more detail about the extension to the shopping centre.
There has not been any major expansion since Jubilee Mall. Except for Cabot Place West last year but that was just part of the car park that had been converted into shops.

There is a whole new section in this part of the Estate which contains the Canary Wharf Idea Store, Starbucks, a sports shop, a Barclays and soon-to-be-opened Jamie Oliver's new restaurant. The mall also extends under the State Street building and I expect 25 Churchill Place as well, but at this stage they are empty units. The biggest problem is that this portion of the mall isn't connected to Canada Mall because of Waitrose and the dock canal being in the way so gets hardly any visitors.

Canada Place Mall is accessible from Churchill place mall via the two enclosed glass footbridges over Bellmouth Canal.

Oliver's restaurant (Italian & Rocket) opens in Churchill Mall in autumn 09. It is at ground level (entrance) with a balcony inside overlooking the Mall.

The old project for a 71-metre tower on the site was never going to suffice. I'm glad they proposed a 130-metre tower on the site to match with the existing One Churchill Place skyscraper.

This one is now dead although full planning permission was granted.

Not a loss.

Canary Wharf has submitted a new planning application for a 19 (instead of 23) storey office building. Presumably a purpose build tower. Bloomberg? Deutsche Bank?

No renderings yet. Coming soon.

Dare we hope for something remotely exciting? Any design is obviously going to be pretty bulky but please let's have something a little bit different.... please?

I quite like the box and bland for Canary Wharfe. I like the way anything with style goes in the City of London and anything boxy goes in CW. Bish Tower or the Shard would look really out of place in CW so I think boxy and bland is OK for cw. It makes a distinction betweem CW and the City. Probs nobody will agree with me but there you go.lol

I agree with you, the least that can be said of the CW style is that each building, and the boxy estate as a whole, has a significant urban "presence". Seeing the shots from Poplar of CW's northern side in the crossrail station thread is fairly exciting (at least to me!)
