Quote:
".. Beijing has agreed in principle .. municipal officials said .. but
Shanghai officials said on Wednesday they had yet to receive Beijing's
formal approval for the Hangzhou link. .."

Beijing approves 30b yuan Hangzhou maglev rail link

by Pamela Pun, January 27, 2005

Beijing has agreed in principle to the building of a 30-40 billion yuan
(HK$28.28-37.71 billion) magnetic levitation (maglev) railway between
Shanghai and Hangzhou, in time for Shanghai's World Expo 2010,
municipal officials said.

The train would reach speeds of 450 kilometers per hour and cover the
170 km between Shanghai and Hangzhou, a popular tourist city, in just
26 minutes.

China already has the world's first maglev line in commercial
operation, a 30-kilometer connection between Pudong International
Airport and downtown Shanghai opened in 2002.

Maglev railways - where trains float on a magnetic field - are much
more costly to build than conventional railways. But their maintenance
costs are said to be lower because there is no metal-on-metal contact,
they are quieter, and they can reach speeds of up to 500 km/hour much
more easily than conventional trains.

A Hangzhou municipal official said construction of the line was due to
begin next year and be completed in 2009, just before the Shanghai
exposition will probably bring a flood of tourists into the area.

But an official of the Zhejiang provincial development and reform
commission said the provincial government just hoped to have a new
Shanghai-Hangzhou rail link, whether maglev or conventional, in place
by 2010.

Until now, Hangzhou has shown clear preference for a conventional line
because of cheaper costs and because maglev is incompatible with the
rest of the Yangtze River Delta rail network.

Sources said officials hoped the maglev link would eventually be
extended to Suzhou and Wuxi, two other key centers in the Yangtze
Delta.

The new maglev line would have four stations - the Hangzhou eastern
rail station, Jiaxing city in Zhejiang, the Shanghai southern rail
station and the World Expo station.

Shanghai's maglev line is already slated for an extension to connect
with the World Expo subway station and the southern rail station, but
Shanghai officials said on Wednesday they had yet to receive Beijing's
formal approval for the Hangzhou link.

The Shanghai maglev line, using German technology, cost 10 billion yuan
to build. It carries 5,000 to 6,000 passengers per day, far short of
original government expectations.
