Liverpool City Centre Liverpool One - - White - 1 - Red - 3 Columbus Quay - 1 Hanover Street (Novotel) -1 Duke Street (Lever Court) - 1 Mann Island - 2 Total = 9 Rest of the City* Liverpool John Lennon Airport - 2 Edge Lane (Big Yellow Storage) -1 Total = 3 * Open to additions on this one. Anything outside the city centre and within the Liverpool City boundary is fair game. I know there are others in the region we could feasibly include - the cranes at the New Brighton Floral Pavillion and Whiston Hospital for example, but to include them would be pointless unless you completed a whole of Merseyside count which I think would be prohibitively difficult to firstly compile and beyond that keep accurate.

theres a smallish crane thing and a piling rig in LJMU on Byrom street at the moment. Don't know if you'd count that? I'm not familiar with the technicalities, but its the same as the Stent on the left in the foreground of this picture:-

I'm open to correction by others, but I'd say no to that one primarily because it's mobile. Nice try though.

It makes grim reading to be honest, but this thread hasn't been updated for a couple of months so for what it's worth -
Liverpool City Centre Liverpool One (Hilton) - 2 Columbus Quay - 1 Hanover Street (Novotel) -1 Duke Street (Lever Court) - 1 Mann Island - 2 Total = 7 Rest of the City Liverpool John Lennon Airport - 1 Edge Lane (Big Yellow Storage) -1 Total = 2 Corrections are welcome as always.

This depressing count is reflected pretty much everywhere at the minute. Things wont improve anytime soon either.

Crane Count Sept 08
A Terrex saddle jib crane is now working on Laing O'Rourke's site at the John Moores Uni on Byrom Street, so making the count-

I did harp on about this probably 12 months ago, that we shouldnt have been fooled by the number of cranes forming part of Liverpool One. The most important thing was the number of projects on the go or planned. I think the sheer size of Liverpool One made councillors feel too confident that they could mess about with/direct investors to do their bidding, stalling investment and scaring off new proposals.
This is bearing fruit now, with as pathetic number of cranes on the skyline and few in the pipeline (I'll believe Central Village when I see it!). |

![]() I think we knew that the huge number of cranes we had was in large part due to Liverpool ONE, and therefore it wasn't sustainable in the long term. However I don't think any of us thought that we would see such a massive reduction. I know I thought that although we mightn't reach our peak of 31/32 again, I did think that some of those lost would be replaced by others, providing some kind of off-setting effect. I just hope that we can see some slow recovery in the number of developments starting. If not, in a couple of years time, the only crane we'll have left standing is Columbus Quay (if it hasn't collapsed through lack of maintenance by then).

With the addition of the crane on the Hampton by Hilton site, it seems like a good time to give this thread a periodic update.
Any corrections to the following? Novotel -1 Mann Island - 2 Hampton by Hilton - 1 Columbus Quay - 1 JMU (Byrom Street) - 1

![]() Thanks. Probably a good job it's been taken down. I'm not sure how long it would have remained safe had it continued to be left untouched.

If anyone is out and about over the next few days, can they confirm we have gained a luffing jib crane? Looking on Wirralcam, it appears to the right of the two tower cranes at Mann Island. Any ideas which site it may be on?

Thanks Woody. I did think about the Hampton by Hilton site, but (as it was fairly clear today), you could make out the existing tower crane on that site, and it seemed so much smaller, so I thought perhaps the new crane had appeared somewhere a little closer to camera.

I spotted a luffing jib crane going up off Hanover St., don't know the exact street name but it's the road between the two multi-storey car parks (old and new). So that makes -
Novohotel- 1 Mann Island-2 Hampton by Hilton - 2 JMU - 1 Total for city centre-6

![]() Wasn't there already was two cranes on the Hampton by Hilton site (one standard tower crane, one luffing jib)? Did we lose one, and have now regained it? Anyway, it's been a while, so time for an update - Mann Island - 2 Hampton by Hilton - 2 JMU (Byrom Street) - 1 Novotel - 1 Adjacent to Seel Street (anyone have a name for this one?) - 1 Total = 7 Any corrections?
