Wow, how old was that previous traffic map? Traffic volumes have increased by 50-100% on most stretches!

I'm surprised there's not more traffic towards Kaunas/Vilnius, and it's not much bigger than towards Tallinn.

that's probably because of the nordic mentality that Latvians have, going to north is their appreciable direction IMO and the only nearest preferable destinantion in south/west direction is Germany (due to many common qualities and other stuff that unites them with germans) but that's too far form here, that's why such countries as Estonia, Finland and maybe even Sweden are closer and better to go in all meanings!

^ Ok, but you don't go to Finland or Sweden every day. As for Estonia, it's sparsely populated, and the closest bigger destination is Tallinn, which isn't so close. Lithuania is more densely populated, let alone Poland.

well not only Tallinn is the most popular destination for Latvians in Estonia - also Parnu, Valga, Tartu.. however, I think that yes, there are more cities and other densely populated areas near Lithuanian border, which are closer to Riga than the ones in Estonia..

No idea really, even though this exists in minds of our three republic inhabitants it's strange that the flow is less to the south from Latvia than to north. Though, the only explanation for this is that there always had been more open relations of latvians with people in north than in south and also when there existed such countries as Livonia (which included both Latvian and Estonian nowadays territories) and Great Duchy of Lithuania, relationship of, let's say, Livonians and Lithuanians was very strained, thus latvians were ought to stay in good touch for long times with Estonians and such tradition has become strong since then!

With traffic intensity growth the 2 laned road A2 through town Sigulda won't handle it's traffic. So it's necessity to build a new bypass and reconstruct the old road.
On the new 4 laned ekspressway the allowed speed will be 110 km/h. Now Sigulda foresees two variants. In the produced 1st variant is the new bypass construction around Sigulda and the old road reconstruction. But in the 2nd variant old road widening and no bypass construction. Both variants will cost 180 million lats. Siguldas new bypass will be completed after 2015. Red: 1st variant Blue: 2nd variant

Are we going to have at last a real 4 way highway until Pleskava? And not a 2x1,5 roadkilling highway like via Baltica? On maps, it looks min. 2x2. In reality it is really unsafe and slow 90km/h. Drivers are cheated!

Let's hope they'll do the right thing and build a real bypass as in the variant red.
I don't recall seeing much traffic when I was there though. |

They should definatly build the bypass, especially when they're equally expensive. Isn't there a National Park near there?

You mean "Gaujas nacionālais parks"? Planned bypass isn't in it's territory.

A map showing infrastructure development for Riga region in the future:
The red and green lines indicate high speed roads (ekspressways) and motorways that going to be built until 2013/2014.

OMG!! That looks really cool and quite perspective! But in such difficult times I doubt even half of that will be built..
