McDonalds are also expanding, it seems their rebrand of internal layouts and seating worked well as they've had better than expected yearly results.
I suspect, they'll be wanting to compete with Subway so I imagine they'll be wanting another branch in town (Devonshire Quarter - open 24 hours - is a likely hit, similar stores in similar areas in Liverpool and Manchester) and possibly re-opening on the Moor?

Not sure what its like now, but I went to the (then) Runaway Girl for a meal and it was delicious. We had lamb fillet things cooked with henderson's relish-based sauce. Super.
Thyme Cafe in Broomhill is superb, with a lovely back yard in the summer. Shame we haven't got a top-notch independent place in St Paul's area yet... |

went to Otto's last night (formerly San Lorenzo) on Sharrow Vale road.
Downstairs was smallish (cosy?) and had a nice atmosphere and clean feel. Most starters around a fiver, mains £10 - £15. We all had different starters and mains and every dish was excellent with good sized portions. Starter of crab / advocado with salad, £5, excellent. My steak (£13) was top notch, medium rare. Would have it rare next time as I though it was "over done" for medium rare, but still lovely. Wine was bring your own, £2 corkage. Makes the meal much cheaper if you're a drinker. Service was excellent, but midweek it generally is. I try and avoid weekends as service is poor at most places (can't speak for Otto's). Only slight negative, not a lot of pasta / pizza choice. Doesn't bother me at all, but would some. I'll definitely go back. UTB Last edited by trader blade; January 30th, 2009 at 11:27 AM. |

For me, the food at Jumbo, No1 and Flamin is much of a muchness. I think they're all really good for what you pay, if a gut bust is what you're after. Clearly lots of better alternatives if it's quality you want. UTB |

Not a big fan of Chinese food, but my favourites would be Platillos (beautiful!), UK Mama, Piccolos, K-Pasa, Que Tal, that Lebonese place I always forget the name of on West St. and Bahn Naan.
As for pub/bar food, the Fat Cat is brilliant and very good value (and good for veggies) and Takapuna does nice tapas-type food. The New Barrack tavern on Penistone Road also does good food, many on two mains for £8. As for chains, Zizzi/Pizza Express and Strada are always OK. Never been in Wagamama/Aagrah on Leopold Sq., but heard nothing but good. Nonnas has been hit-and-miss for me, and is generally full of dicks. Heard great things of Piccolinos in SPP1 too!

Yeah think Platillos is great and Picolinos, fan of Nonnas, Thyme in Broomhill and Canton Orchard in Ranmoor.
Good food on offer in Popollos and Zizzi, plus Walnut club is good too. Some bad ones for me, sorry Lewis but UK Mama is top of my list, everywhere at Centertainment - I HATE Nandos (McDonalds on a plate anyone?) |

Bahn Naan is a good choice - the Thai place near Sharrow Lane is good value too. Siam Inter I think. I noticed on a website a Thai place advertised in the brew house on Ecclesall Road. Anyone know anything about this? Pie, chips and peas at the Barrack is a feast! A couple of months ago I washed it down with a blue beer from Bradfield...

I had a lovely Bradfield yesterday at the Barrack called "The Devil and the Farmer's Wife". A 6.66% Porter (I think) - really nice, velvety smooth.
The get a good, frequently rotating selection at the Harlequin on Nursery Street too. And yes Soupçon, it was Sheiks I was thinking of. I love Thai food, but never heard of Siam Inter - will check it out. Anyone ever tried Kumquat Mae on Abbeydale Road?

Been to Artisan in Crosspool a fair bit recently, 3 course meal for £16 and it's all home cooked. None of this bought in pies etc you get in most chain pubs/restaurants. Stuffed by the end of the meal - struggle with the desert.
Going to try Silversmiths some time as they also have a 3 course for £15... Although I suspect it may be quite full over the next few weeks since they were on tv the other night. |

When I was there back in 2006/07 I always absolutely adored Hui Wei on Glossop Road. Best Chinese I ever had; I still miss it.
