The Chernivtsi University (current full name Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University)
It is outstanding service of bukovina’s metropolitan Eugene Gakman (1795-1873) that this provincial town have received its own University. It was due to there were several more famous rival-towns, which competed with Chernivtsi to be the city with own University.
Old Prague needed Czech High School, the motherland of Mozart – Salzburg would restore to life University, which functioned till 1810; Triest port town also wanted to have University. On 31st of March 1875 Franz Josef signed into law about the Chernivtsi University founding.
So let’s watch at the main building of the University, the residence of metropolitan in the past. The building was constructed according to the project of bright Czech architect Josef Glavka.

The level of efforts was great. Specially for the construction the special quarries were worked, 2 brickyards and pottery started to work. Also school for construction workers was founded. Austria-Hungary have never seen any like this!!! Almost 18 years Glavka was creating his masterpiece.The construction was built carefully. Every brick was checked for defects by size and sound. One builder was allowed to lay only 100 bricks a day and no more!!!
