@KMFDM: I am glad you have good memories from the Triangle. Just so you know, Durham is also on the way up these days. Believe it, or not, several things have changed in the Triangle since you left, and Durham is no exception. Raleigh gets the bulk of the improvements and if you come back next time you will be impressed... for this area's standards, of course. The new convention center in DT Raleigh broke ground recently, condo buildings are beginning to appear all over downtown, there is a proposal for a 32-27 story high-rise (across from the cylindrical Clarion Hotel, on Hillsborough Str), the 15-story Quorum Center is under way (behind Ri-Ra) and the list goes on. If you keep an eye in the Southeast forum, you should see a Raleigh construction update within the next 2-3 weeks.
@LEAFS FANATIC: You are right, people in the Triangle are overall very nice and friendly. Sure, this may not continue to be the norm forever, but I don't expect to see behaviors changing any time soon. Glad you enjoyed your stay here and I surely hope you get another chance to visit again. If you do, you have to try Taverna Agora (Glenwood Ave/Hwy 70, North of Crabtree Valley Mall). Sure, it can't compete with NYC, Chicago, Toronto and other metros with large Greek population, but if you want to invite your co-workers/friends to a Greek dinner, that is a great place to go. Their lamb chops dish is great, and so is their rose wine. I am glad you found this area interesting. Coming from someone who lives in a world-class city, it is a great compliment for Raleigh

I'm not Afghani, but in all honesty, Afghanistan is probably far more interesting than wannabe-European Turkey.

We understand your denial.
Of course, Afganistan is more interesting than Turkey, with a long history and an interesting culture. P.S. Who told you that Turkey is in Europe? It has land in Europe and mostly in Asia but even our language is Asiatic. We don't deny it, as you deny your background. But it is OK.

Why did you get the idea I'm from Afganistan?! I don't deny my background. I'm just not a flag-waiving chuvinistic moron like most Turks. Anyway, I have many backgrounds (mother born to Sapnish father and Portuguese mother, father born to French mother and Italian father). I've grown up in many different places because of my dad's job among which are, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Britian and France. I am fluent in five different European languages, namely English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian... as you can see, I'm beyond nationality. I am European, something, you my friend, will never be.

For The People Of The Diaspora...Let's Post Pics Of The Greek Parts Of Our Cities
I'll Start.
Toronto, Canada has a population of approximately 6.5 million (including the suburbs and greater metro region). The Greek population of Toronto is substantial at approximatley 200,000. The "Greek Area" of Toronto is on a street called Danforth Avenue. It is on this street that Greek restaurants, stores, soccer clubs, bars, clubs, and lounges can be found. It is a major tourist attraction and teh annual Taste of the Danforth festival is the largest Greek festival of North America, drawing over 1 million visitors every August (most of these pictures are from that event): ![]() Last edited by LEAFS FANATIC; August 15th, 2005 at 04:27 PM. |

Chicago's Greek community goes back to the 1870's when the first Greek family migrated here from Kerkyra. By the early 1900's, Chicago hade 55,000 Greeks while New York City had 35,000. Today most Greeks are scattered around the metropolitan area. The actual number of Greeks range from 100,000 to 250,000. Most likely, there are about 175,000 Greeks living in the Chicago area which itself has a population of 10 million. New York's Greek community is probably around 300,000 to 400,000 out of a total population of 22 million people. The vast majority of Greeks here, can trace their roots back to Peloponisos, mainly Tripoli, Sparti, and Kalamata. There are also large numbers of Kefalonites, Chiotes, Epirotes, and Kritiki. Chicago's Greektown is known as the "Delta", and is located on Halsted St. in the West Loop (just outside downtown Chicago). During the 1970's a "new" Greektown developed on the northside of Chicago, in the Albany Park and Lincoln Square communities (I live here). At it's peak (during the mid-70's) their were approximately 25,000 Greeks. Today the area is extrmely diverse (Arabs, Mexicans, Filipinos, Indians, Greeks, Koreans.....)There are 21 active Greek Orthodox churches and a monostary just outside Chicago in Wisconsin.
Here are some photos from Halsted St. Greektown Chicago: These photos are credited to http://neighborhoods.chicago.il.us/
