Spot on JPD! I stayed there once when it was the Albany and it was OK then.

Then I stayed a couple of years ago when the refurb was starting.

I had a "new" room - total shite. It was already tired.

This needs demolishing asap.

Crowne Plaza Birmingham hotel to re-open

ONE of Birmingham’s best known city centre hotels is being re-launched tomorrow after a massive refurbishment costing £16 million – more than the original cost of building the hotel.

The multi-million pound re-vamping of the Crowne Plaza Birmingham is expected to bring a hefty boost in business and has already been well received by guests.

The transformation will help the 35-year-old hotel to compete with a growing number of new hotels that have sprung up in Birmingham in recent years.

The transformation has taken 13 months to complete and sees the opening of B1, a new destination restaurant, a floor dedicated to meeting and conference rooms, two Club floors and the Vista Suite which offers panoramic views over the city.

All 312 bedrooms have also been re-designed to create a more relaxing and comfortable environment.

And the two club floors will always remain empty because no-one will pay for the privilege of using them and they refuse to upgrade their premium guests to these rooms. This is the only IC hotel in the world that refused to upgrade me.

Dunno what the club floor is but it's where I'm staying, there was some sort of offer so it was the same price!

Club floor = executive level = business class. Type thing.

In most decent Crowne Plazas and Intercontinentals they usually have a club lounge (on the restricted access club levels) with beer, wine, spirits, snacks, etc... As much as you want basically included in the price. Essentially like flying business class and being able to get slotted in the executive lounge beforehand.

If its the same price as a normal room then its a good deal. My guess is they run a promo on it cos no one wants to pay the standard club level prices, just like I said.

Having said that I'm not sure the Birmingham CP has a club lounge, just better spec rooms.

I was on the club floor, only because it was the same price as a normal room, it does have a club lounge but it is pretty small (about the size of 2 rooms), luckily the hotel was quiet so there was only us and another couple in there.

The overall internal finish and quality is poor and will wear very quickly, the lifts sound like they're falling apart and the corridors and rooms are already looking tired. They missed a trick with not moving into a brand spanking new V Tower.

I think what Jay said here is pretty much spot on, funnily enough two of the 4 lifts were out of order The pictures of Birmingham were a great touch though, there's also a really nice piece behind the counter in the lobby with the Rotunda and the brass Bull.

It is a nice hotel though and at the right price I'd use it again, it's marketed as 4* Duluxe and 'Birminghams premier hotel', but it's not a patch on the Radisson.

Yeah, it's nice at the moment. If the price is right I'd stay here again too, if only for the views. It's not Birmingham's premier hotel, I hope visitors staying there don't think that is the best we have to offer...

That's what I would expect from a refurbishment: High-quality clean exterior and interior. Before the refurbishment, the hotel looked low-budget.
