Kenya's KCB signs $452 mln Sudan housing project

NAIROBI, June 1 (Reuters) - Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB.NR) said on Monday its mortgage subsidiary had signed a $452 million deal to finance construction of housing units for government workers in southern Sudan.

Most of south Sudan has been devastated by decades of war. Civil servants, aid agency workers and businessmen in the capital Juba fork out high prices for accommodation in tented camps or dilapidated buildings because of a lack of proper housing.

"There is an increasing need for residential houses in many towns in southern Sudan due to the growing population of public servants and employees of private and non-governmental organizations," KCB Chairman Peter Muthoka said in a statement.

The money will be used to put up 1,750 units.

After decades of civil war, rebels in the south signed a peace pact with Khartoum in 2005, but analysts and residents say the deal is shaky and fighting could erupt again in the future.

Sudanese officials said the housing project should be a sign to investors that peace would hold. (Reporting by Helen Nyambura-Mwaura, editing by Will Waterman)

Sudan scraps gum arabic monopoly

Sudan has scrapped the monopoly on production and export of essential cola drinks ingredient gum arabic, in which the country is the world leader, official news agency SUNA reported on Thursday.

President Omar al-Beshir issued a decree ending the monopoly rights held by the Gum Arabic Company to buy the raw resin drawn by farmers from certain types of acacia tree, mainly grown in the Kordofan and Darfur regions.

The gum works as an emulsifier enabling a stable mixture of water and sugar so that no sugary residues are left at the bottom of cola bottles.

The United States retained the right to import the gum in 1997 when it imposed economic sanctions on Sudan accusing it of sponsoring terrorism.

I'm sorry if this question is silly, but is that railway in use? I'm curious if the blowing sand causes problems with the rails.

Maybe its a good idea before you post image to add the photo of the state where it has been taken, coz Sudan is a continental state!
You type in google -> river nile state sudan, and you will have a link to wikipedia.
Click on it, on the right, there is a picture of the state like i posted it

Khartoum - Wad Medani road or the death road - Too narrow and too crowdded

image hosted on flickr

image hosted on flickr

For the Wad madani map, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wad_Medani

And about the dangerosity of the road:

The road from Khartoum to Wad Medani is the main highway to Port Sudan [It was in 2007 but now there is a direct road].
It is used by buses ,articulated lorries as well as other transport. Although the road is tarmac, it was not constructed to carry the volume or loads that it has today. Pot holes are rapidly filled, but not much can be done about the noticeable ridge/ruts on the lane coming from Port Sudan and going to Khartoum.

It is a very stress-inducing drive, especially at night when the headlights are blinding and give no indication as to the size of the oncoming vehicle. Add to that , some people drive off road and their headlights are quite confusing too.So anyone who dares to drive here, needs to be especially careful and be on constant alert for oncoming madmen trying to overtake, pedestrians, animals, and unexpected barrels at police check points.

A further distraction is that as you approach Medani there are numerous advertisements for a mobile phone company attached to posts every few metres along the road. They have a hand with one or two fingers, a fist or a pointing hand. Most distracting.

Sudan, China sign $396mln contract to heighten Roseires Dam

Roseires Dam was built in the south west of Sudan to help control the water coming from Ethiopia during the flood season. There had long been a town there, but when the dam was being built a new town on the west bank of the Nile was started. Damazine is now a flourishing community maybe larger than Roseires itself.

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) will extend Sudan a 58-million Kuwaiti Dinar (USD 212 million) loan for heightening the Roseires Dam
The initial capacity of the dam is 3.4 md. c.m. however the accumulated silt in the dam lakes has reduced the storage capacity by 25%. The project aims to heighten Roseires dam to increase the storage capacity to 7.3 md. c.m.
