12-05-2005: GSC to invest up to RM48m on 2 new cineplexes

By Tamimi Omar

PPB Group Bhd’s 54.2% subsidiary Golden Screen Cinemas Sdn Bhd (GSC) is investing up to RM48 million for the building of two cineplexes with a total of 26 screens, says GSC chief executive Koh Mei Lee.

It is opening 13 screens at 1 Utama in Petaling Jaya by June this year, with an investment of RM18 million. It is also investing between RM25 million and RM30 million for a cineplex at KL Pavilion in Bintang Walk to be opened in the first quarter 2007.

“With the opening of the KL Pavilion Cineplex, we would have a total of 121 screens in 19 different locations,” she told reporters after PPB Group’s AGM in Kuala Lumpur on May 12.

GSC now operates a total of 95 screens in 17 locations, including the 18-screen cineplex at Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur, which is the largest cineplex in Southeast Asia and the largest distributor of Chinese and independent English films.

Asked if GSC was looking into expanding abroad, Koh said: “We are looking at viable opportunities in Malaysia; until all viable opportunities in Malaysia have been explored, then we would look for opportunities outside Malaysia.”

She said GSC’s sales for the year was expected to do better compared with last year due to better movie titles. “The line-up for the summer season and the year-end looks very promising,” she said.

GSC's revenue rose 19% to RM104.30 million in the year ended Dec 31, 2004 driven by increased admissions and the opening of GSC’s 12-screen cineplex at Gurney Plaza, Penang in January 2004. It posted an operating profit of RM11.86 million.

Koh said GSC strategy was to target the up-market segment for better returns to the company.

Meanwhile, PPB Group chairman Datuk Oh Siew Nam said the group would face a tough year due to the increase in fuel cost and volatile palm product prices but assured that “generally, we would do ok.”

He said the group’s capital commitment this year was also expected to increase to RM420 million from RM251 million last year due to higher operating expenses and the group expansion activities.

No...not that small lah.....I think you're thinking it is the small triangular land but that part is just a small part of the land.....the bigger portion is connected to it. Just go and see and you'll know what I mean
