MANAMA: Bahrain is the number one place in the Gulf to do business, according to global experts. It has been rated the most business-friendly country in the GCC and 33rd in the world by Forbes, the world's most prestigious business magazine. The report highlights a series of factors that have already attracted numerous multinational firms to Bahrain, including the kingdom's diversified economy, its well-established financial services sector and leading position in Islamic finance and its highly developed communication and transport infrastructure.

"Bahrain provides the most attractive business environment for international companies looking to access the markets of the Gulf and wider Middle East," said Bahrain Economic Development Board chief operating officer Kamal Ahmed.

"Our strong business track record and long-term strategy of economic diversification is backed by the highest and most transparent regulatory and supervisory standards in the region.

"Our well-developed infrastructure maximises our strategic location as the gateway to the Gulf."

Best for business!
Posted on » Monday, September 14, 2009

MANAMA: Bahrain is still one of the best places in the world to do business - and to keep your job, according to figures released yesterday.

It has been ranked 20th worldwide and second in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in the World Bank's annual report on the best countries to do business.

The country has also stemmed its unemployment rate at under four per cent, shrugging off any major impact on jobs as the world reels under the economic crisis, according to the latest government figures.

Bahrainis registered as jobless totalled 5,616 last month, an unemployment ratio of 3.9pc, according to Labour Ministry figures.

But there were 8,663 jobs open on the market and 1,329 training opportunities on offer via the ministry.

Of the 2,043 people receiving unemployment benefit last month, only 528 were new claimants and only 177 were people who had just lost their jobs, said the ministry.

The figures indicate that the country has successfully contained the impact of the global economic crisis, with the year likely to end without major impact on the jobs market, said Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi.

Bahrain slipped two places to 20th out of 180 countries in the World Bank's Doing Business 2010 report, which measures business regulations and their enforcement.

It ranked second only to Saudi Arabia in the MENA region and topped the chart in terms of granting construction permits.

The news comes just days after the government was named as the seventh most financially efficient on the planet by The World Economic Forum.
