The city looks remarkably tired. |

![]() Too bad for those towers along the river, I find them ugly and too large, have taken the view over the city and the river view from the city. I would never permit their construction |

There's low-laying land behind them and a school, they're not stealing the view from anybody, if anything they're taking advantage of it.

Awesome!
Some of those shots go way back. 1908? Wow... My grandmother is about the only person I could call on to actually remember that (she's 102, lived in Brisbane all her life). |

Wow, really amazing photos. I love the old rail cars.
This open area, however, is a nightmare of a civic space (by the looks of it at least)

This thread is fantastic, great photos guys.
I have seen an old photo of brisbane though (not sure from when) which has a bridge between new farm and kangaroo point. Near where the story bridge is now but a little further down river. But I never knew a bridge existed there, has anyone else ever seen this? I saw the photo on a calender that a guy I used to work with had. |

In fact the only Brisbane river bridge to not be in existance today is the earlier versions of the Victoria Bridge. The present bridge is the 4th in that location. Number 1 (1865-1867) collapsed, 2 (1874-1893) was damaged by floods, and 3 (1897-1969) was demolished. No other bridge has been built that isn't still standing. |

Correct Aussie Bhoy- The Story bridge was the last bridge before the bay (prior to the gateway) and is the height it is to allow ships to pass under. You can see in the old gold AMP tower photos the old docks which were in use up until the early eighties.
The position that Yuma talks about is roughly where Evans Deakins shipyards were. These were still in operation until about the mid eighties however there has never been a bridge here. The closest is basic planning for a pedestrian bridge. However if you think the Kurilpa bridge was expensive a bridge here would be substantially more due the the span required and the lack of height on the Kangaroo point side (frankly I can't see it happening due to the engineering alone for a pedestrian only bridge). |

It will be my first trip back home to Brisbane in close to 2 years in a couple of weeks time which I am really looking forward to (currently based in the UK for a few years). I am quite interested in seeing some of the things which have been built since I was there last like the new tunnel, the Kurilpa pedestrian bridge and the new King George Square along with all the usual new stuff on the Gold Coast. The photos here on this page are my first glimpse at King George Square. Looks kinda bland. What does everyone else think of it?
If anyone has any old historical photos of the view of Brisbane please post them here or let me know. I would dearly love to get a hold of anything like that. I am keen to try out my 6x17 panoramic camera when I am back in Brisbane and SE Qld. Hopefully I'll get some good ones I can post up here on the forum. |

Some more, found on Picture Australia, mostly from the National Archives and the BCC online library.
