Trams left Newcastle for good around 1950 when the road networks were becoming congested and trolley buses were beginning to dominate. It wasn't worth investing in the upkeep of the tramway system so they were ripped up and paved over. Incidently, I'm sure someone may correct me but I think the trolley buses actually operated from about 1935 till the late 60's
