mother trailed by policeman for telling son off in supermarket

Rebuking your misbehaving children is now enough to have the police on your back, apparently. Welcome to Britain's police state.

Quote:
A mother who reprimanded her children at a supermarket was secretly followed by an off-duty policeman and interrogated by fellow officers who reported her to social services. The 34-year-old, who has had no previous problems with the police, was horrified when she was visited at home by two uniformed officers six weeks after the incident. They said she had been seen by the off-duty officer who had trailed the family to their house – a 15-minute walk away – to get their address.

She said: ‘I went over to them, carrying my bags of shopping, and my words were something like, “How dare you behave like this – you’ve been arguing and fighting all day. If you carry on like this you’re going to get another hiding like the one you had earlier.”’ She admitted her language might have sounded harsh but said she had wanted her son to get the message she was really angry. Her rebuke had the required effect because her children were later very apologetic. Towards the end of September, however, two policemen knocked at her door.
Quote:
A (police) spokesman said: ‘It was not an ordinary telling-off and because of what the woman said and the way her children reacted to it, it gave our officer reasonable grounds for concern. We followed this up, as you would expect any police force to do.’
... apparently ignoring the law, because

Quote:
Under the law, mild smacking is allowable under a ‘reasonable chastisement’ defence against common assault. However, punishment that creates visible bruising, grazes, scratches and cuts can lead to action.

It's amazing for such a lefty forum that you all post articles from the mail. Which leads me to the conclusion that you're secretly all conservatives at heart.

If the article is accurate, which I doubt, the copper sounds like a complete idiot. If the police had thought there was some danger to the children, why wait six weeks to follow it up?

The whole story sounds a load of rubbish.

So you think what happened in the story, if true, is totally ok then?

Some of us are centre-liberals.

Attitudes like this are partly to blame for the ills of society.

Really? Maybe I should become a respectable pillar of society and start becoming outraged at the Daily Mail everyday?

My mum used to threaten me with similar things when in shops when I was playing up yet I've grown up a good boy, if a little shy and law abiding.

...good for you. Nothing wrong with being shy and law abiding, certainly better than being loud and thieving!

I've thought that too. Like little boys who pull the pigtails of the girls that they secretly love!

I work in a supermarket and we were told to report any incidents of a mother hitting their kids with considerableforce to a manager.

However I reported a woman putting a bottle of vodka in her handbag to a manager and he did fuck all, so i wouldn't read too much into it.

I'm a bit partial to vodka. Which supermarket do you work at?

Sainsburys

10 guys at work today chased down a customer in the car park for taking too many 3D glasses for the channel 4 thing, even though they're free and it says 'help yourself' on the box.
